Battery Life

Okay, I have discovered how to make the 8600 standard battery last a VERY long time between rechargings. Like the manual says, charge the battery fully before using it for the first time. Do not let the store activate the phone for you. Take the phone home and fully charge the battery with the phone off. Then activate your phone. The VZW store activated my phone and the battery drained fast, so I bought a new battery and fully charged it before using it at all, and now my new battery lasts for three or four days of heavy use before I have to charge it again

It is my understanding that a Verizon store will not let you walk out the door with a new phone that is not activated.

I wanted to give this phone as a gift. They told me to give a gift certificate instead as they would not sell me the phone not activated.

True or false?

FALSE. Although I have not done that yet myself, I just called my local VZW store and asked them about it, and they said it was okay to buy the phone and take it home and activate it myself. You just need the ESN or MEID number which is on the box, and on the phone under the battery.

Returned to my Verizon store this afternoon. Again asked if Verizon stores (anywhere) will sell a phone and allow it to walk out the door with no activation. He said no Verizon stores will allow this.

You can purchase a phone by mail directly from Verizon and later activate it. Not from a store.

I asked why! He said Verizon does not want people buying phones from their stores and then reselling them on Ebay or wherever.

True or False?

That guy you talked to is full of baloney. Just because a phone has been activated does not mean you cannot resell it. You can dactivate it again and then resell it. Call some other VZW stores around the country and ask them. You can get their phone numbers on the web. Besides, what do they care if you resell your phone? They have already gotten their money out of you.

i believe you are a victim of coincidence. this shouldn't make any difference at all since the battery is lithium ion (or lithium polymer - i forget which on this phone - but it doesn't matte). remember that the battery manufacturer puts a half to two-thirds charge on the battery before shipping since lithium batteries do not like to be completely drained. modern battery technology allows you to pretty much charge the phone whenever and wherever without having to worry about hurting it. i bet that if you were to go get another battery and charge it like you did your first one there is a good chance you will still have good battery life. sounds more like you got a bad battery the first time around. i have had plenty of phones (some phones i h...

I think you are missing the point. It says explicitly in the Instruction Manual that comes with the phone (and I quote): "It's important to fully charge the battery before using the phone for the first time." They must know what they are talking about; this is their product.

Yes, I have. I went back to my local VZW store and bought a new battery for my 8600 for $35.99. I brought it home and recharged it fully before using it in the phone, and I am now getting terrific performance from it in the way of going for much longer times between recharges.

I tried it and it works. I also tried the extended battery (remembering to fully charge it first) and it lasts forever, but it is heavier and bulkier than the standard battery. I weighs 1.1 ounces as opposed to the 0.7 ounces of the standard battery, making the phone weigh 3.66 ounces instead of the original 3.26 ounces, too heavy to carry around comfortably on one's belt.
