Contradictions - does BitPim + MP3 = ringtone?

I've been trying to do my research, but there are too many contractions. I currently have an LG VX6000 and I love how I can create my own (free) ringtones using a data cable and BitPim. Can I do the same with the 8600? I have heard that Verizon has disabled this ability, but I have also heard that it does work (as long as BitPim is set to the 8500). Thanks in advance...

Good question. I have the vx8100 and might think about getting the 8600 in March. Hope someone tells us. I like using Bitpim too with my phone.

Yes, the 8600 works with Bitpim. I promise. You do have to set the phone manually to LG VX8500 because the 8600 isn't listed in Bitpim. mp3's work well, and bitpim has a mp3 editor built in.

Ditto to g8tor. As in the post he references, I managed with USB cable and BitPim to move everything (ringtones, wallpapers) on my 8100 to my 8600.
Have fun 🙂 ANd thanks again, g8tor!

Thanks you guys. One more question if I may. Does the 8600 have an MP3 player like the 8100 or are you stuck using the Verizon music VCAST player? If it does have an LG version MP3 player with the equalizer, is it as loud as the 8100 and is it better as in (sorting files into folders) not just the big slew of songs on my memory card.

Sadly, the 8600 does not seem to have the music quality of the 8100. If there is an equalized, I have yet to find it. But the VCAST player seems to do an adequate job sorting the music.
Seriously, I have yet to see a phone that will replace my iPod. I love this 8600 for its size!
Hope this helps 🙂

I liked the size of it too. However, I'm IPODless. So I do like the MP3 function. Do you carry it in a holster or just in a pocket? I'm afraid I would break the thing it looks so nice and smooth.
