Sprint is launching first. Radio Shack will have them by first week of June. Rumor is unbranded (unlocked? doubt it highly though) available via palms retail store tomorrow.

Sprint is also launching several other new phones this quarter (Nokia & Motorola).

First CDMA/iDen (PTT only) will be Q3.

Unlocked? please man, no such thing you should know this. CDMA is ESN specific to carrier, no locking or unlocking to get on dif carriers possible. sorry to burst your bubble. And yes Radioshack by June.

Also Sanyo 8400 this quarter

Technology=Boner.

That's technically not true.

Verizon phones are not locked, and can be re-programmed to work with other carriers. (...if that carrier is willing to activate it; Sprint won't.)

Sprint phones are locked and they won't tell you the unlock code (MSL) but it does exist.

Every CDMA phone has a menu to re-program it (usually hidden, but it's there). It's not nearly as easy as a SIM card swap, but it is possible.

There are plenty of catches - like incompatible data services between most CDMA carriers - but for basic voice service, switching...

He said "unbranded and unlocked" and those two terms are used to describe GSM phones not tied to any particular carrier. While you can technically activate a CDMA handset with another carrier, it's not common practice and people who KNOW phones don't call it "unlocked." And the phone would ALWAYS be branded.

I see what you guys are saying, thats kinda why I put it in parenthesis. I was just passing on what intel was given to me. I really didn't get how Palm could sell an unbranded CDMA device (Like they do w/ the GSM 650)....

Thanks for the feedback though! 🙂

GSM 5 billion plus potential users, CDMA 350-400 million potential users, Palm missed the boat on this one. What are they thinking??

Versed,
I do not think they are missing the boat at all. CDMA is very popular in the Americas and Asia and their 3G networks are already mature and stable as the WCDMA / HSDPA integration issues are really effecting the Cingular / AT&T transition.

It is almost June and still down here in L..A., they don't even have the WCDMA network lit up. I was talking to one of the Cingular engineers a a few weeks ago, as they are installing a new tower on top of my building and they are so far behind schedule its unbelievable.

Also, Sprint is going to REV-A as soon as the Feds take complete control over iDen, so thats an even bigger boost. I think Palm is supporting a very large, stable user base that is hungry for a reliable device.

3G is based on CDMA. The question is whether GSM will survive the long haul.

You have a good point, that and Palm being a U.S. based company, with agreements in place with Verizonwireless and Sprint. Still, they should have the resources to come out with a cdma and gsm phone. Smaller companies like HTC can do it. They should be able to.

They probably could, if they wanted to. They may have found that the GSM services didn't mesh with their phones as well.

It's always difficult to know why companies do what they do.

Could be many reason's, they could have sent out feelers to both US and International GSM carriers and didn't get postive response. As far as GSM, the 650 is out in GSM as well as CDMA. Could even be as simple as development money.

Well, it's not as though they are as rich as they once were. It's a real shame. But, they don't even own the OS any more, so when people complain about them not using Cobalt, I think it's called, it's not fair. Besides, Cobalt is dead, supposedly.

The phone I was waiting for a year ago was the sadly discontinued Samsung i550. That would have been all that I wanted.
