[why] did they make this so insanely thick..

  1. Large battery
  2. Large / high-quality speakerphone
  3. Durability

This is basically designed to be a Nextel-style phone for Cingular.

I work for Cingular, and I've tested this device. Although it is thick, the battery life on this phone is excellent, and it's performance is very good as well.

You betcha, the battery goes close to a month for me between recharges. Far better than the one week life my old LG had.

The only thing I don't like, I use a holster to hold my phone, and they put buttons on the outside that I pushed every time I pulled the phone out. Had to resort to carrying the phone in the holster upside down so I could pull it out of the holster without changing the ring style or activating PTT. I'd love to be able to change that to disable the buttons unless the handset is open, and would like to be able to change the menu to get rid of the stuff I don't use.

And about time, too...Nextel related Motorolas seem exceedingly well built. Very nice.

Ummmmmmmmm...and your point would be...?

I don't mind a slightly larger phone if it's going to hold up to abuse.

Agreed - just because they have the technology to make phones smaller doesn't mean people's hands are getting smaller. Many have called my 6682 hefty, but it's the perfect size for me.
