I'm about to get my 8525. This is my first time owning a ppc. Are there any programs or applications you guys can recommend. I've heard of downloading and easier browser to use etc. I usually use Mozilla Firefox on my Laptop, is there a version for the pocket pc or one you recommend. Also do I need to use a virus protector or a spyware reomover on my pocket pc... All advice will greatly be appreciated since I'm new to using a ppc. 🙂

I highly recommend that you use Opera Mini for your browser, GSplayer for your audio files, TCPMP for video...

And ultimately... get slingbox for your home so you can use slingbox mobile on your 8525. Live TV... view all the channels that you get at home on your 8525.

I appreciate the advice... I'v heard of Opera Mini. Are theses programs free to download?

As for slingbox, can i view live TV anywhere I'm at, or just at home..? And how much does this program run?

The programs are free...

The slingbox... you can view live TV from anywhere and access the channels you have at home... as long as you have a broadband connection (Wifi, EVDO or 3G) from your PC or mobile handset.

The slingbox will run you $180 (one-time fee) for the device which you hook up to your cable box and home broadband connection. There are no monthly fees with slingbox.

it really just depends on what you use your phone for. For me, windows live is a must, photo contacts pro, spb backup, a reg editor, ui tweaker, and some kind of button mapper.

i guess a better question would then be.. what apps are just must haves in terms of making life just easier no matter what kind of user you are. things to make the 8525 a better machine.

windows live is one of them for sure.. anyone would find this usefull.

what is spb backup and ui tweaker? also, what can a button mapper do that you cant do with the built in function?

thanks!!

Firefox developed a PPC browser called Minimo, it's really cool looking, has tabbed browsing and such, but it just plain sucks, it's incredibly slow and a resource hog -- my Axim has 64/128mb with all the memory decidated to running programs isnetad of storage and runs at 624mhz, and Minimo crawls on that. The best mobile browser I've used yet is Opera mini, but you only get a 30 day trial and have to pay $30 to register it. But it's great, better than PIE in my opinion. Also saw an article today about a new mobile browser under development called Deepfish, no word on how good it'll be, but supposedly it can emulate a full-blown desktop browser experience.

Actually, Opera Mini doesn't work with Windows Mobile phones. It works off of Java, and Java cannot run on the windows mobile platform. You want to download Opera 8.60 for Windows Mobile:

Its not free, only has a 30 day trial, and cost 24 bucks. Though, its probably worth it.

opera mini should run fine on this device. this java app CAN run on a widows mobile ppc as long as java is included on the device. the cingular 8125 has java while the t-mobile MDA does not. that is why opera mini works great on my 8125 while it does not on my friend's MDA. the 8525 most likely has java since its predecessor did. so you should be able to use the free version for all your browsing needs. 🙂

Does anyone know what, if any, browser/program would allow opening of e-mail attachments, other than Yahoo? The problem with Yahoo is that the print is too small, and does not allow increasing the font size. Comcast and Opera do not, for some reason that I cannot figure out, allow opening of attachments. Thanks to any who can help.

It's saying that it is only available to a select number of users? Looks like it "might" work, if I could set up an account. Can a request be made? How would one get "invited"?

Well, I was successful in setting up the account, but unfortunately, when I just tried to open the attachment, I got a message that said: "sorry, we can't show a preview for this attachment type". If only my Group Wise account did not require that attachments show as tiffs. Oh well, thanks so much for trying to help!

well actually what you could do is forward your email to a mail2web live account which goes to your ppc. Then you are able to open attachments. I fwd my gmail to mail2web live and am able to open attachments on my 700wx.

I just wanted to say that I did not have a good experience at all with Agile Messenger. Once I got it running i thought it was a good product, but it seemed to cause my phone to not run right. A few times I had to do a soft reset as a result of leving agile messenger open.

IM+ services worked a bit smoother than agile, however IM+ always kept getting logged off instant messenger.

Sling box was amazing. I cant say enough about it.

Skype worked great

Opera Mobile and Opera Mini worked well for me. opera mini is free opera mobile free for 30 days.

Mobi TV was great also but who needs mobi tv if you have sling box.

I had some trouble with the ringtones that I purchased thru cingular's media site.

I think this is something you have to pay for after 30 days... And what makes this browser so much better then just using Internet Explorer on your ppc...?

Has anyone used the "Magic Button 2.0" program on there 8525 to shut down programs easier.. How does it work for you. And as for the Skype program to make calls through the internet... If you connect through wi-fi can you only make calls to other people with the skype program or can you make calls to landlines? Any info would greatly be apprectiated.

My favs:

IM: Palringo - to me, the best option for IM on a smartphone. Works with all major networks and you can send quick voice or picture notes to other palringo users. Has a light-weight windows client too (can run from USB stick.. no install needed) www.palringo.com

Input: PocketCM Keyboard - iphone style keyboard. Much easier to type on with my larger fingers.

Maps: Google maps

Calc: Kon Pluscalc - works ok. Just experiementing with this one now

Voice comm: Skype & Fring (www.fring.com) - Fring allows you to do SIP. Another option is gizmo5 (www.gizmoproject.com)

Password mgr: KeepassPPC - Nice password manager. compatible with KeePass Windows so you can share the same password files.

Task Switcher: pBar - N...
