Can you tether this phone to a PC to act as a modem?

Of course you can as long as the software that LG has works with this phone unlike the software for the cu320 that doesnt work.

This would be my first LG phone, so I don't know what software that would be. Can you point me to it?

Also, is the charger proprietary or the mini-USB?

Thanks for the quick reply Seedub.

You don't need anything software to tether and use DUN via Bluetooth. All you need are drivers, which are available and work just fine, to tether via USB.

It was the exact same for the CU320. I tethered via USB and BT just fine.

Do they come with the phone, or where can I download them? Sorry to seem dense, but this would be my first LG.

It seems that no special drivers (or other software) is needed for the phone. The manual states on page 34:

"The PC recognizes the phone as a Removable
Disk under My Computer. Open the folder
where your music is stored and transfer your
files by dragging and dropping them onto the
Removable Disk icon."

Software features I will miss include sending text messages from my computer and editing contacts on a full keyboard.

I think I was wrong about "no drivers needed" in one of my earlier posts. I was confused at the time.

It is possible (I'm not an expert) that you need this driver: LGUSBModemDriver_Eng_Ver_4.5.exe

I found it by googling the name and downloading it. In fact, this was the link where I downloaded it: http://www.fileindex.net/search.aspx/src~LGUS BModemDriver_Eng_Ver_4.5.exe/fs~1365874

The file resides at us.lg.com, so I ignored the "this software is not verified by Microsoft" errors when installing it. I now am connected to my phone, but I don't konw if it had anything to do with this driver or not.

that link doesn't work when I tried it. Can you email the exe file to me?

The link of the file is:

http://us.lge.com/download/product/file/1000000399/L ... »

If that dosn't work, then give me your email address and I'll e-mail the exe to you.

Remember that I can't get my phone to work as a modem, so you may be going down the wrong path here.

Download the Cingular Communications Manager. It's easier to find the download site via Google. Your computer and CU500 must have been paired for the CM to work.

Okay, I give up. I tried to set up the phone as a modem, but have not succeeded.

I have the data cable and bluetooth. Using either, I can browse my 1GB SanDisk memory card.

This is how I tried to set up the phone as a modem:

1. I followed these instructions, and tried to manually set up a DUN:
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Cingular_Wireles s_FAQ/MEdia_Configuration

That didn't work (with the USB cable). I tried installing the Cingualar Connection Manager, but that wouldn't recognize the phone (bluetooth or USB cable). I then tried to install a LG Modem driver: LGUSBModemDriver_Eng_Ver_4.5.exe

See http://forums.cingular.com/cng/board/message? board.id=LG&message.id=9083

But that didn't work either. I then tried blue...

Okay, I tried one more thing and I'm much closer now. I reset my computer after installing the LG modem driver. I then make sure that the phone is connected, but I exit from the USB mass storage mode on the phone. Then, the phone is recognized by the Cingular Communication Manager.

The Communications Manager created a DUN named LG Mobile USB Modem #2. I don't know why the #2, but whatever.

I can see my text messages stored in my phone on my computer screen, so everything seemed good until I tried to connect to the network. Then I get this error message:

"Error 619: A connection to the remote computer could not be established, so the port used for this connection was closed. For more assistance, click More Info or search Help...

It is interesting that you didn't try the actual Cingular support web site. After you log into your account, go to Support->Phone/Device support. Choose the right phone, and ask the question: "Connect device and laptop/PDA to access internet." This should bring you here:
https://onlinecare.cingular.com/support/setupOTW.do »

Select the laptop with the OS you have, and you will get to a step-by-step explanation (both with the Cingular Communicator, and without it).

Note that the non-Communicator USB solution talks about some software you should have gotten with the USB Cable - I never got such software. My windows XP desktop did, however, recognize the device as a modem, when I set the phone up as described there.

I haven't followed u...

Thanks. I should have tried there first, of course.

Now that I've tried the Cingular support site, I get the same 619 error. It connects, but can't authorize. I tried the Cingular instructions for the Connection Manager and setting up my own connection.

Hmmm. Let me know what else you guys are trying.

Thank you all for the help. I finally got it working. I'm connected right now, actually, at about 600 kbps as measured from

http://reviews.cnet.com/7004-7254_7-0.html »

I've learned a lot in the process (not an expert Windows user). I don't know if you really need the LG driver that I mention above or not, but it's working.

In MD, driving north on 95 at 80mph, switched to EDGE network and now getting 37.5 kbps says cnet.com.

Switched easily between 3G and EDGE without a problem, but during my initial connection I had to rest my phone because it kept refusing a connection. I could surf on my phone either, which is why I rest the phone. That worked.
