With my last phone (Audiovox) I removed the outer cover and resprayed it with plastic primer, topcoat then clear. Looked great.
The VX5300 looks like you could do the same: 1st use a pin to pick out the small circular rubber pads around the inner screen - there should be screws under these to remove the outer cover.

I think if you want style, they want you to go to Chocolate (when it comes out), VX8300 or FUSIC.

ya, even though the 5xxx's do look pretty lame, I almost think they do that on purpose to give people another reason to move into a nicer phone.
this series has always been more about price-point and mass-appeal features than styling, and that seems to be going well so far. We've got the 3xxx for the cheapos and fogeys, the 5xxx for Joe Sixpack, the 8xxx for the power users, and soon the chocolate series for the people who want to do it all and look good. 😉
