Verizon allows you to activate any Verizon phone by going to My Account, Activate Phone and entering the Serial Number (follow instructions). If you buy it from Walmart, however it may not work with Verizon. What you can try is to go to Walmart and copy down the serial number from a display phone or ask them to let you copy one from a box, then go home and try to enter it on the site. It it works, you're good to go. Don't worry about changing right back to your old phone, I've done it many times without a problem.
