Built in GPS work with Prepaid?

The built in GPS sounds great, although I currently use GPS for free with a blootooth device in my current HP device for free.

Since the built in GPS is "assisted" by the cell towers will it be using minutes? Or will those of us that use pre-paid plans not get to use the GPS functionality?

No cell phone I know of uses true GPS, it's all AGPS - "assisted" by the network, which is going to be using data - small packages of data that pinpoint location. Most prepaid plans don't have provisioning for mobile data, so you may be out of luck.

OOoh, I mght be wrong - I posed this question to a tech desk person here (I work for Cingular) & he said that it may be just network/tower identifiers that the phone uses to determine location, so even if you have data turned off, it might still work. Depends on the provider. YMMV. 🙂

Have you heard any more info regarding the HP hw6900? I am looking for a replacement for my Audiovox p.o.s., which replaced my Treo 650 (actually the 5th Treo 650 in 11 months!)

IT says GPS not AGPS. From what I have read that the European phone has the TOMTOM version. Also I noticed the North American version will use MS maps and Streets software but in thge fine print says something about a 60 day trial. If that is all they are going to offer then why have GPS. OR I will have to find another free software program or hack it.

I noticed the MS streets version as well. My experience with that Pocket PC software is that it has a map but no turn-by-turn directions. Might this be a modified version?

I certainly hope so. They better have a fully live demo phone not just the regular demos or the ones that work but the GPS doesn't work. So that you never know tell you walk out of the store.

Check this out:

It makes sense that the HP & others aren't going to try to explain the difference, given the confusion that could arise. In some ways, it works better than GPS (since it works indoors).

FYI - I have a 6515 and the GPS works without a SIM.

This phone does in fact have autonomous GPS and it may be the only group of phones (HP phones) that do this. This means that it needs no assistance data from some network element to determine where it is. This takes more than an instant to calculate making it bad for emergency services location, but really nice for mapping and such where time-to-first-fix can be a few minutes.

It most certainly does have AGPS logic. When you dial 911 (or some other location aware 'application' wants location) a network entity tells the phone where to take measurements (which satellites are currently within view). The raw data is sent back to the entity who requested it and location is calculated. The phone really has no idea where it is at.
