awhile ago, I purchased the samsung sch-a950 and hated it because there was too much emphasis on vcast and not enough on the simple qualities i want in a cell phone. Strangely, one of the things i hated most was that you couldn't turn the external screen light on unless you held a side button for about 5 seconds. Is this one the same, or is it a quick and easy touch of the side button?

You have to hold the side button for about 2-3 seconds.

If you want a phone with an easy to read outer screen, get the Motorola E815 or V325. Both put emphasis on being a phone first. On the E815, the outer screen is STN which is very easy to read in sunlight and lights up instantly after one press. Even in standby mode, the time displays in black and white. If you want to get back to basics entirely and have tri-mode, the V325 is an excellent phone. The V325 display is black and white so it's also very easy to read in sunlight and only needs to be light up at night. What's also nice is no button presses are needed to see missed calls on the V325.

What's also nice is that the V325 doesn't have Bluetooth, and has an external antenna. I especially love the one line external gray scale display from 2001. Nice touch, Moto.

Hell, the E815 even has terrible build quality, creaky hollow plastics, a terrible external pixelated display, to top out the package. Yay!

Just hold the side button for a second and the screen comes right on...

Does holding in the side button also light up the external screen when the flip is open?
Thanks.

Nope. When open, the external buttons all have functions. The screens kinda glows a bit, but not so you'd notice. It's almost like it's "on", but is showing black color. Weird.
