T-Mobile will issue the unlock code to any customer who has been in good standing for 90 days. I called to get the codes for my v195 and my wife's v360. They promised an email within 24 hours. I called when I hadn't received anything in about 30 hours, but the email actually came within the hour. The v360 code took longer - it appeared that they had the v195 code on hand, but had to get the v360 code from Motorola.
I don't know of anyone who's figured out a free unlocking solution. I think that the only known 3rd party unlocking solutions require opening it up to touch the testpoint, but I'm not sure about that. In any case, it was a lot easier and safer to simply get the code from T-Mobile.
