signal strength: EV, TX, D, etc. -- what do they mean?

What do the bars by the EV, TX, D, etc. indicators mean? I'm concerned that I am not getting an "in network" signal -- is there a way to set the phone to ensure that I don't get hit with roaming charges? The manual just says what these are, doesn't really explain them or go into how to change how/when they display.

Could it be under Settings&Tools, Phone settings, System Select? The choices are Home Only and Automatic -- Automatic was factory-set on my phone so I haven't changed it.

Thanks for helping. As you can see, a newbie with a lot of questions on the new toy! 😉

verizon's plans are all national, you will not be hit with roaming, unless you go to canada and mexico. some phones will say extended network to indicate included roaming, others will have a triangle that flashes to indicate included roaming. if you have a phone that says extended network, it will switch to the word "Roaming" when being charged, if yours has the blinking triangle, it will stop blinking and stay solid when charged roaming is being used. You should be able to end the roaming feature if you select "home only" on your phone. The problem with this is that it will probably not go into extended network anywhere and if you really need to use the phone in an emergency, that would be a problem. But, how to do it is:

ok-left-left-phone settings-system select- home only.

EV indicates if you're in an area with EV-DO (highspeed) coverage.
1x is the voice signal strentgh indicator
(1x - is display while in a voice convo)
D (only) indicates a digital service area only

EV & 1X and EV & D - may also be seen together.

When I'm in my home service area, I'll turn my ERI banner off, however, when I'm traveling, I'll turn it on.
The ERI banner is what will tell you if you're on VZW's network, extended network or roaming.

Hope that helps.
