Looked at an 8300 today

I finally got around to going over to the local VZ store to look at the new 8300. I was impressed. It has the exact same form factor and feel as my old 6000, which was excellent. Much better feel to it then my Moto V3I. They did not have any on display however. They only had the 8100's out. I had to ask if I could see one, and a sales rep went to the back and brought out a new one. Turned it on and let me play with it. When he looked up my account I found I could have one for free (other then about $29 in sales tax). I would have taken it then, but they can't transfer contacts for another week or so because they don't have the software for it yet. I took the reps card so I can ask for him when I go back next week to get one. When reps trea...

they can transfer contacts although they probably don't know it. Tell the to use the program for the 9800 and power the phone on when it starts to transfer the memory to the target phone. If they are using the same system that we are it should work.

If I could have gotten mine for free, I would have transferred my contacts by hand!

I can still get it for free next week though, and let them transfer them using the new software. I'm not in any hurry. Thanks for the tip about the 9800 software by the way. Its a VZ corporate store and I don't know if they will try anything other then whatever their internal company policy says to do.

Go to get it now and download the backup assistant and you can download/upload from your current phone to the 8300. I costs $1.99.

Really? Didn't know that was available. Good idea. I may try that instead. Is it $1.99 every time you use it, or just to download the software to each phone?

I just did it last night. Reactivated my 8100, downloaded Backup Assistant ($1.99) from GIN, backed up my contacts, reactivated 8300, downloaded BA (another $1.99), and restored contacts. Works great. You spend $4, but unless you are a Merit member, you will pay the store more -- which for now is a moot point, since they don't have the software.

I looked at it on the VZ website and seems like the way to go then. However, it says that the cost is $1.99 per month, not just to download it. How do you cancel it after you use it, so that it doesn't keep getting charged to your account every month? I'm not very familiar with using their website for doing things. Always used to just go to the corporate store and talk to someone in the past.

I guess Bitpim would do the same thing IF it starts supporting the 8300 soon.

Thanks.

Just delete the application from your phone before the last day of your billing cycle. That way you won't be charged again next month. Yes, Bitpim will do this once they start supporting the 8300. I didn't want to wait that long, and with nearly 200 contacts didn't want to do it manually. $4 well spent, IMO.

if you can't waite you can always download backup assistant in get it now, it will cost you 2.99 and back up all your contacts. Then buy the 8300, redownload backup assistant, another 2.99, and you can recover your contacts. This will cost you 6 bucks, the store usually charges 10-15 bucks anyway.

I went to the VZ store on 6/13, the release day of the 8300, bought it, and the tech went right into the back room and transfered all of my contacts right then.

The VZW stores don't have that capability in all areas yet. I'm in the KC area and the stores here don't have the software yet; at least they didn't as of Thurs. Same thing happened when they rolled out the 8100 last year. I bought the first one they sold here, and they didn't have the data transfer software for a couple of weeks after that.
