Question about silencing ringer

I will probably update to the 8300 from the LG 4500, and am wondering if the external side keys on the 8300 can be used to silence the ringer. My 4500 does two cool things...

You can toggle in and out of manner mode by holding the "down" button for a couple of seconds. And when the phone is ringing the same button can be used to silence the ringer with one push, and send the caller straight to VM with 2 pushes. Without opening the phone. Can the 8300 do this?

Is that so? I just tested it on mine dialing from my landline to my 8300. When the call was coming in, I could press either the "Up" or "Down" keys to silence the ringer, but neither sent the call directly to voicemail, no matter how many times I pushed it or how long I held it. Also, I've been looking for a way to turn all sounds On and Off while the clam is closed, like I could on my vx6000, using the side keys. Guess you have to have the clam open to use the Up and Down keys to accomplish this...

You can press any button on the front or side to silence the ringer, but you can only send it immediately to voicemail (ignore) if you have it open. You can change the answer option to 'press any key' or 'send button only' if you want to be able to open it and then press ignore without answering the call. The only way to put it in manner mode is by opening it and holding down the key.
