Problems with non-Cingular versions

by dave_reid1958    Dec 14, 2006, 11:32 AM

I'm not a Cingular customer so I don't have their 3125. I'm making this post both to caution others as well as to see if anyone else has had the problems I am having.

I purchased a Qtek 8500 on eBay from a well-regarded seller. Initially I was very pleased with the Win Mob software performance (I have had many other WinCE devices over the years and am very familiar with the software).

But after I while I realized the the phone function was poor (and after all, it doesn't matter too much how great the device is otherwise if the *phone* part doesn't work well!). I'd experience many times when my phone wouldn't ring even though I was in a good coverage area, voice mail indicator would often be slow to come on, things like that. So, I tried to get warranty support - no luck. The dealer I purchased from ignored me and the Qtek people said that my serial number was one they won't support.

So, since I liked the device so much and it is the only flip phone available with WinMo 5.0, I then purchased an i-Mate Smartflip. On this one, the phone works great! But, the rest of the stuff is just crazy. If I set an alarm, it goes off repeatedly both before and after it is supposed to. If I enter an appointment, whether directly into the phone or via ActiveSync, the reminders start going off many hours in advance. If I send a text message, it reports it sent but doesn't really send it. I contacted i-Mate support and they told me to re-flash the ROM. I did that - no improvement. They then had me send it to their service center in Miami. That center doesn't yet work on the model, so they sent it to Dubai. The Dubai people supposedly replaced the main board and returned it, but the same problems remain. Contacted support, they made me re-flash the ROM again. No improvement. Then they again repeated the process of having me send the thing to Miami, and the Miami people have again shipped the thing to Dubai. So I'm once again waiting for the thing to come back.

I'm into this process for four months, out over a thousand dollars, and still hoping to get use out of this great-appearing device.

I reported this problem on the club i-Mate website long ago and saw that one other person chimed in saying that they were having the same problem, but then i-Mate shut down the forums on their site so I couldn't check back to see if any more people reported it.

Anyone else have the Qtek or i-Mate version of this phone and if so have you had problems?
