Internet Browsing

Just curious. I am considering upgrading from my terrible V3 ASAP. I am torn between the 3125 and the 8125. I really like the feature set in the 8125, especially the built in WiFi, but I don't know if I want to pony up an additional $40 a month for the data service. The 3125 doesn't have WiFi, but the unlimited data plan is only an extra $20 a month. I guess it's going to come down to how well each handset handles internet browsing. Anyone able to offer any help?

I have both of these devices although by other names as I'm not a Cingular customer. T-Mobile calls their version of the HTC K-Jam the "MDA" and I have had one of those for several months. I also have an i-Mate "Smartflip" which is like Cingular's "8125". (All of these devices are manufactured by HTC.)

They really are completely different devices intended for different purposes. The 8125 is MUCH larger than the 3125, and it is a full featured pocket PC with phone while the 3125 is a very small device with Smartphone software. In my opinon the screen of the 3125 is too small for effective web browsing and it lacks a keyboard. Also the lack of wi-fi is a handicap for web browsing. Sure you can use GPRS or EDGE in a pinch and can even ...

Hey Dave,

How's internet browsing for tmobile? Do you have to pay an extra fee to use data?

i'm thinking about the new pearl, or the htc smartflip, but either way im a pretty casual user who would only use this to play mp3's or videos.

T-Mo does it like most I think, they have plans that include unlimited 'net usage or if you don't buy one of those you can pay by the kb. Most everyplace that you can get a phone signal you can use GPRS and many fairly well populated areas you get the faster EDGE. EDGE still isn't all that fast though - T-Mo doesn't have a real "broadband" service yet.

The smartflip has an especially nice feature for mp3s - there are external controls for the player. However the memory card location is poor so if you want to carry multiple cards that would be a drawback. Also the audio connector is proprietary, limiting choice of headsets. It does support stereo bluetooth though.

Yeah, the external controls (and display that shows track information) is awesome.

The memory card design is not the best, to be sure. I think it was necessitated due to them cramming so much into this form factor.

And yeah, the headset connector is proprietary. If you're going to use this as an MP3 player, pony up the extra $30-60 and just get a good stereo bluetooth headphone set. 🙂

Yeah I'm aware of the propriatory connector... it's a bummer. Those headphones look pretty uncomfortable too. Are there any stereo bluetooth headphones that aren't very bulky?

Logitech makes some pretty good ones, I think.

I'd probably look at it like this: If your main goal is to have Internet access on a portable device, that also has a phone, get the 8125. If you want it for everything else, and Internet is something you can go without, get the 3125. The wi-fi option in the 8125 seems very cool (I haven't used it), but the 3125 is super, super portable. So again, bottom line, if you want Internet, get the 8125; otherwise, get the 3125.

Good luck!
