Problems with non-Cingular versions

I'm not a Cingular customer so I don't have their 3125. I'm making this post both to caution others as well as to see if anyone else has had the problems I am having.

I purchased a Qtek 8500 on eBay from a well-regarded seller. Initially I was very pleased with the Win Mob software performance (I have had many other WinCE devices over the years and am very familiar with the software).

But after I while I realized the the phone function was poor (and after all, it doesn't matter too much how great the device is otherwise if the *phone* part doesn't work well!). I'd experience many times when my phone wouldn't ring even though I was in a good coverage area, voice mail indicator would often be slow to come on, things like that. So, ...

I have a Qtek version I purchased unlocked and have had no problems using it on the Cingular/AT&T network. I did look for a ROM update (I like to keep things up-to-date) but the Qtek website won't accept my serial number (like you) and I can't find an update that is available anywhere else. HTC provides updates with no issues but I'm leary about updating my ROM with their version in case it breaks something.
