GPS LOCATION?
so i thought a while back the FCC mandated that all phones activated in the united states were required to have gps location. how is it that this phone along with a couple other samsung phones like the x475 do not have gps? wierd

No, the government only required that carriers be able to locate all phones with a certain degree of accuracy for E-911. They did not require a specific method or technology.
Only CDMA and iDEN carriers chose a method that involved GPS.
GSM carriers chose a completely different technology that works completely on the network side, and can locate any GSM phone. Nothing special in the phone - GPS or otherwise - is required at all.
Therefore only CDMA phones have GPS technology. GSM phones do not.

Sorry, I didn't mean to say there's no such thing as a GSM phone without GPS - they certainly exist.

Yea, right, also, you have to keep in mind that the GPS in the CDMA phones is also A-GPS as well. What this A-GPS means is ASSISTED-GPS. The software put in the cell phones with A-GPS makes it far from a stand alone global positioning device. It is dependent on the network and what service providers provide on their networks to work with this new GPS craze. This is where it comes down to the difference between the CDMA networks and the GPS networks. The CDMA networks actually have a service that is compatible with such software as A-GPS, and supports/ASSISTS the software in the phone to utilize the device as a GPS device.
