personally, i don't have a problem with the talk volume.
the ring volume and the volume of music through the headphones could be better, but it isn't so bad I can't hear it.
i too read about the volume problems and it was one of the only things holding me back from getting this phone earlier than i did. but i have no regrets... 🙂

The default volume is pretty low, but you use the zoom in and zoom out buttons for the camera during a conversation to change the volume (+ for up, - for down). Once I figured out how to do this, I was able to set the volume to a level I found perfect.
