Sony Ericsson W810
2.5mm headset adapter? 3.5mm headphone adapter?
Every retailer has told me that there is no way to use a standard headset (2.5mm jack, for mic and mono sound) with the W810i, that not even a third party makes headset adapter for this one.
Is that correct? If not, where do I get the adapter?
While I'm at it, do I understand correctly that the W810 includes a connector that a standard 3.5 stereo audio jack, one that I can plug any standard headphones or earbuds into?

yea u can use 3.5 if you connect it to the adapter... you can use ipod ear buds, sony, etc..

As far as I seen there is no adapter yet. If you are looking for a Stero to Mono earpiece there plenty of those, sp in a way making the standard issue headset look more like a 2.5mm jack.

Think I understand, but not sure. Yes, radio shack etc have things that convert a 3.5 stereo to 2.5, 2.5 to 3.5, or stereo to mono, etc. No that's not what I'm looking for.
My confusion is over the word "headset." I use that to mean telephone gear: a mic and earpiece, usually with a 2.5mm plug.
When I'm talking about just music/radio earpiece(s), usually with a 3.5mm plug, I use "headphones."

To clarify, the Phone comes with a headset/headphone. It has a inline mike and has the normal jack for a stero headphone, so in a way its a hybrid. Soldering seems a little extreme but its possible, although when you use the phone as a radio and walkman you will screw around with the stero effect so in turn may damage the sound or alter it only to play in mono. An easier alternative would be buying a bluetooth headset like the Oakley Razrwire or one of SE's bluetooth headsets.

I take it when you plug in normal stereo headphones into the 3.5" jack, you are also unconnecting the headset portion (read: doing away with, not tangled up with, putting in your pocket)?
As for bluetooth, why? Somewhere here or there I've read that bluetooth is a bit muddy. Fine for phone reception, but not what I want for music, eh? That, and it's more bulk, more batteries, more to break (maybe you haven't dropped as much headgear as I have), more electronics to go bad, technically no privacy ( 👀 Just an an excuse to use that image, although we all heard about that analog phone snoop in Florida), and more expense. So thanks, but no thanks.

I've checked the 810 manual, and I see the configuration you're talking about. It's a standard "dangler" mic (where the mic is built into the cord) with two earbuds instead of one, and there's a jack between mic and buds, so you can replace the buds with any standard stereo headphones.
Unfortunately, you're still stuck with the dangler mic, and can't use your own phone headset. Pity there isn't another jack on the other side of the mic, or in the phone. Sometimes having the mouthpiece right next to your mouth is important. Sometimes so is an extension.
(Definitely wouldn't screw around with modding the stock part unless I had a spare.)
Now that I think about this, I wonder about the Fastport connector's durability, and it also seem...

Anyone see any reason I couldn't snip a Sony phone headset's cord and solder an inline 2.5mm jack onto it?
That is, apart from the clunkiness and absurdity of having to take such a flyer with a $20 part, and needing to find a 2.5mm inline jack.
Similar question about converting for 3.5mm audio-only headphones -- could I start with Sony's MMC-70 (Fastport to 3.5 stereo plug) or MMC-60 (Fastport to RCA plugs)? Or do they attenuate the signal so it's too low to run headphones?
