What kind of files are you trying to store? I'm not sure about things like word documents but pictures, videos, music and the like you can. It comes with a USB cable and you can do it that way, or via BT or IRDA.

Yes, you have to use the sony USB cable. I have the unlocked version and it came with the cable.

When you plug the USB cable into the PC, you'll have to choose b/w 'Phone Mode' or 'File Transfer Mode' on the phone itself. In 'File Transfer Mode', two drives will show up, one for the internal memory and one for the external card. I haven't tried it, but I see no reason why you can't store any file type on the external card via drag and drop.

The good thing is that in 'File Xfer Mode', no software is required, just the phone and cable.

You can transfer non-media files with BT, IR or the USB cable...I did it with a .pdf file. The phone won't recognize it of course, but it will send and receive it, storing in the 'Other' folder.

With the USB cable, the internal and external memory are both generic USB mass storage devices.
