Ringtone File Size and Length

Hey, I'm making ringtones for my a930 by chopping up an mp3 in Audacity, renaming it as a .mid file and then emailing it to my phone.

Right now to keep the file down to the right size (assuming the phone won't accept anything bigger than 300-350kb), i can only have about a 15-20 second mp3 sound clip before renaming it as a .mid. I was just wondering if this sounds about right or if there was a way or different method to get a longer sound clip as my ringtone because my 17 second ringtone almost fully repeats during a call so i know it can go longer. Thanks!

Question, did you actually but the 17 sec ringtone to work? I tried all the different methods described on here but it just won't work.

Can you please detail how you got yours to work. I don't care if mine is 17 secs.

yeah... i did get it to work its just shorter than i would like.

First i put a full length mp3 file of a song into the program Audacity (its free shareware which works with LAME so you can get it). In Audacity you can choose sections of the actual song, so i select like a 15-20 second part that i like and you can cut the rest of the song out. I then export the newly shortened version as a mp3 file. Then you make sure you can see the file extensions in the file name (detailed in another post on this forum) and change the .mp3 to .mid then email it to the phone at (yournumber)@vzwpix.com. When your phone gets the new picture message, select download and then when you see the message, hit options and choose save sound. It will then be...

I did everything exactly. Except I use Windows Movie Maker to cut the song. But when I tried to play the mid file, there wasn't any sound. And when I set it as ringtone, I called myself. No sound. What am i doing wrong??

when you export it from windows movie maker... does it become an mp3 again before you rename it as a mid? or is it exporting it as a wma?

maybe it doesnt like the change from wma to mid... im not sure.. it should work if your doing what i am.. cuz mine does lol.. try maybe getting it as mp3 before renaming it as a mid.. either get audacity to export it as an mp3 or get a wma to mp3 converter... thats the only thing i can think of that might be going wrong

I think it is the wma to midi change that is the problem. I did the mp3 to midi change and it works fine.
Try lowering the quality of the mp3 to get longer ringtones

If you wish to avoid all the emailing... BitPM .9.02 will work if you select a a950 manually. (need data cable and drivers)

Ok, I did the change from mp3 to mid now...and I send it to my phone. The good news, I can hear it on my phone. The bad...when I try to save the sound, it gives me the option of changing the name. I've tried a shorter name, no name change...the phone always froze on me. The file size is only 172 KB's.

If anyone has used a different (a670) samsung in the past... the .pmd tones will work through BitPim .9.02 if you do the manual setting for a a950

Read the forum post called

Instructions: Get ANY mp3 ringtone to work

These are the only instructions I could get to work, and it seems like any length will work. Follow it to the tee. You must you Audacity. Then open in Winamp and check for the v2 tag. Must have a miniSD card.
