No. Just press and hold the down button on the left side of the phone as you face it. Wait for "Speak now" then say the name. It will dial, then talk. No need to open the phone.

Yes, you can voice dial through the blue tooth ear piece. But, that might depend on the model of your ear piece. Mine (Plantronics behind the ear doodad), had a button I held down. I then heard the beep for "speak now" and recited my person's name. It connected. When done, I pressed the ear piece button again to hang up. I kept the phone in my pocket the whole time and never had to operate the phone to call.
