1. Does the phone have to be open to voice dial?
2. Can you voice dial through the blue tooth headset without doing anything to the phone first? Seems illogical to have to get out the phone and mess with it to voice dial with BT

No. Just press and hold the down button on the left side of the phone as you face it. Wait for "Speak now" then say the name. It will dial, then talk. No need to open the phone.

Yes, you can voice dial through the blue tooth ear piece. But, that might depend on the model of your ear piece. Mine (Plantronics behind the ear doodad), had a button I held down. I then heard the beep for "speak now" and recited my person's name. It connected....
