Not necessarily.
My phone completely died yesterday and required the AC charger (I spoke with a moto tech about this)

The usb charging depends upon the output of your PC's usb port - which varies from PC to PC.

As a general rule - the USB port may only "maintain" current battery life.
I've noticed varying performance from 2 diff. PC's - one charged the phone, the other just kept it from going any lower.

I'm pretty sure the User Manual explains that the PC USB only maintains the battery. You need to use the wall charger (or other type) to actually charge the battery.

The manual's claim of only maintaining battery level is not necessarily true.
One of my PC's actually charged the phone via USB.

I believe it depends on the current battery level, and the output of your USB port.

However, you are correct that other PC's will only maintain battery level.

I'm not sure why this is - my blackberry will always charge from USB. Maybe it uses less power?

Different PCs have different motherboards and different power supplies, furthermore if your PC was built to support high voltage USB devices then it will. Generally 90% of desktops have midium size power supply and when you order it with nice video card it will absorb majority of power therefore your USB port will be weak and won't be able to charge the Q

There are certain USB devices that require more power than what a single port can provide. I have a 2.5" laptop hardrive USB enclosure that I got for $15 from Ebay - this thing has a mini-usb connection and 2 USB connections on the other end.

I used this 2 headed USB cable plugged into 2 USB ports on my laptop and was able to charge & sync w/ the USB.

I couldn't find a supplier that sold just the cable, but if you search ebay for "2.5" usb laptop enclosure" many of these coming out of HK include this particular cable.

What would be perfect if someone made this cable w/ a mini-usb that is right angled because I don't like that it sticks straight out of the device when plugged in.

just following up - I got the extended battery yesterday, the double-usb cable works great charging that also!

One warning though, if you're using a laptop, these cables have maybe 3" between the two big USB connections so your 2 USB ports on your laptop should be pretty close to one another. My wife's laptop has one usb port on each side so this cable doesn't work (the Q is actually for her). Obviously desktops won't have a problem since most have those 2 stack USB locations.

I may just get the docking cradle though.

I have three laptops, as well as the charging cradle; two of the notebooks charge the Q just fine, and one does not. I also have a USB cable in my car that plugs into a USB cigarette lighter which does NOT charge the phone, only maintaining the current level. What I am curious about is whether anyone knows of a specific USB lighter adapter will draw enough power to charge the Q. I use cables that are charge-capable, so that is not the problem. I was able to use this method to car-charge my VX6700 and it is more convenient for me because otherwise I have to leave the cigarette tray open constantly.
