I'm curous if there's a decent GPS capability in the current or future Q phone? Or is this something that could be added with some MiniSD card of some type?
...
nothing to add just buy software for microsoft mobile 5.0
there is software ranging from a few $$s to like 200.00 the functionality is there you just need the software

I believe the above reply is incorrect. The Q does not have built-in GPS, so you must first purchase a GPS device (you can attach this via bluetooth) before using any kind of GPS mobile software on the Q.

The Q has at least aGPS all phones at least on verizon require it. the software will probably work, but read software compatability first. it can be found on www.microsoft.com windows mobile 5 section

Let's not get GPS confused with Cell Tower triangulation. If you want true GPS with all the GPS features, moving map, turn by turn instructions, route management, distance to destination, time to destination....then you will have to buy a GPS receiver and GPS mapping software. Cell Tower triangulation only gives the service provider (Verizon) a close proximity of where you are. 😲
...
it is not solely triangulation it is only assisted by the towers, it is still reciving the signals from above. and verizon does have Get It Now program that does just as you described (VZW Navigator). For a definition of aGPS go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AGPS

As a pilot I use GPS almost daily. ( San Francisco - Frankfurt ) I don't see anything in the Q specs. that refers to the Q having a built in multi-channel GPS receiver. On a couple of HP units, yes. Did I miss something when reading the preliminary Q specs. I must admit that I have not tried VZW Navigator. I presently have an i600 with Windows Mobile 2003. 😕

Eh, while I'm not exactly intimately familiar with this device, I think you might still be confusing the two types of "GPS."
One is the true "track your route" map-based GPS that you have on GPS devices.
The other is more of an "emergency" ability to locate you if necessary. For 911 and stuff.
I'm sure this has the latter, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't have the former.
...
Sorry to double-post but this is from wikipedia:
The main purpose of AGPS is to provide municipalities with location-based emergency phone service, such as E911 service.
So I'd guess that this isn't the one you're hoping for. But we can all hope. 🙂

If aGPS wasn't decent then it would be pointless to have even as a emergency use. It is proven effective via VZW navigator. E911 may have been the original motivation to implement into all phones, but doesn't mean it is limited to E911. Most all technology did not start out where it is today. such as a lot of multimedia technology has come from the porn industry. "necessity is the mother of invention" so the need is E911, no one will die if they don't have live real time directions, but they might if the 911 operator can not send help to the correct location. I'll try to do some research on the aGPS and it's accuracy some time, but right now my DSL has dropped out, and I'm on verizons free 14.4Kbps service through my cell.

That seems to be good enough for VZNavigator to give those features. I'd be more than happy with a VZNavigator style program. Especially if it means not having to carry yet another piece of equipment.
