😕 isn't this the one that will never see the light of day (in the current configuration)? it's not listed as having UMTS 850

No. We received word today that Cingular has decided to make an exception in this one case (I guess to get it out the door sooner). This phone will be Cingular's only 3G phone without WCDMA 850.

This was confirmed today by head spokespeople at both Cingular and Nokia USA.

It'll still work fine on the whole 2G network - including EDGE - you just won't get 3G in a small handful of 3G cities.

My guess is that both companies want to get the existing version out ASAP so that:

1. There will be more higher-end phones in Cingular's 3G lineup. (QVGA display and a few other features place this a notch above the CU320.)

2. Nokia can still be part of the first phase/wave of Cingular's 3G lineup (sort of).

I wouldn't be surprised if later on they replaced it with a 6282i that adds WCDMA 850. I don't have any specific info that this is the case... but it would make sense. It would certainly be consistent with what they've done in the past (like the 6340i and 6590i).

What they need to do is forget about an upgrade to the 6282 and work on getting the N80 out for the US market.

I've been told that Cingular will only be utilizing the 1900 UMTS band until they switch the TDMA and analog networks off in 2008. So having a 1900 UMTS only phone will not be detrimental until that point. And most people get new phones every year anyway.

It would make sense to not deploy WCDMA 850 widely until analog is gone, but what I was told by Cingular folks at CES was a little different than what you heard.

They told me they will be launching WCDMA 850 in a handful of cities this year. The bulk of their 3G network will definitely remain 1900 for now, but I believe in some cities they are constrained by the spectrum licenses they own, and they don't have a choice.
