I read the following in a PC Magazine e-mail:

"T-Mobile to Announce 3G Plans On Thurs., Sources Say - 10.04.06

By Wayne Rash
T-Mobile sources have told eWEEK that the company is scheduling a press conference for Oct. 6 in New York for the purposes of making a major announcement in the wake of the company's win in the recent frequency auction.

The announcement will take place jointly with officials from Deutsche Telekom and from its US Subsidiary, T-Mobile USA, taking part.

According to parties familiar with the company's plans, T-Mobile will announce its move into 3G communications in the United States using UMTS (universal mobile telephone service) at that time.

"T-Mobile will announce UMTS on 1700 MHz and 2...

I bet I'm not the only person that is ENTIRELY AMPED about this great news!!! There are some interesting factors that I'm waiting to find out however. That's more or less why i'm looking forward to see what news can be gathered once the actual formal announcement and press release on this topic takes place. As far as I know, most of the "facts" are proven hearsay and are meaningless. I would be sooooo happy to have my n80 working on t-mobile's future 3G network. We all knew it was coming sometime, and if you look hard enough, you can find previous press releases from 2002 and 2003 about how T-Mobile would be waiting for an auction such as the one we just had in order to finally kickstart a full-blown 3G network. The reason for the long wait ...

Thank you for your response strangerthanfiction48. Already, as you pointed out, there are caveats to this announcement. Quoting from the press release:

"While many European countries have a 2,100-MHz band as well, their band is configured differently, so European 2,100-MHz devices will not be able to work well on the American version."

We will just have to wait and see what it is that they are giving us and if indeed our devices and bands are going to be configured differently than the european ones. It seems to me to be a waste of resources to do this since different telephones will need to be built and the incompatibility will detract from the attractiveness of this enhancement.

alright... based on where ive been reading, and also some more info thanks to engadget, i wanted to post some info now that the official press release is said and done. Good news, this T-Mobile isn't messing around with a full blown UMTS/HSDPA 3G network that they have already begun... -- yes, in fact, they had already started somewhat. This will be a quick, fast, and readily available network to finally browse on the 3G network and (possibly 3.5 G in the near future as well???. It looks like we will be able to buy a compatible 3G phone in mid 2007. Yep, thats right - we're talking using a just started network in namely months!!! (and not like 3-4 years or longer like some companies are taking even with their head start). Bad news is, our n8...
