Regarding WCDMA 1900 - New Buyers

cai

1.- How does one know which version of WCDMA the telephone has?
2.- To new buyers - Does your telephone have WCDMA 1900 or WCDMA 2100?
3.- If WCDMA 1900, where did you buy your telephone?

So far, the stores I have found in the USA, that are carrying this telephone, only have the 2100 WCDMA version. This would be a big handicap for this telephone. Maybe strangerthanfiction48 has an idea as to where to get a USA model.

Thank you.

I know its a error in using the term "technology" as some may call it including a namely few at Motorola, however, you can always find what "technology" the phone is, its included in the description of the phone (i.e. quadband GSM WCDMA 2100) almost 100% of the time, and if not, look at the box, its under the IMEI label on the white sticker on the side of the box saying if it does have any, it will say GSM 850/900/1800/1900 WCDMA 2100 or whatnot. Whether its cellular concepts, a mom&pops shop, Amazon, or Nokia themselves, they know and am sure they would be happy to tell you which frequencies and/or bandwidths the phone is compatible with if you couldn't find it yourself.

Now, I wish I had better news... but as far as the release of a WC...

edit to the end of the 2'nd paragraph - **(probably the only excuse for those who really early on got a hoold of this phone way before it came out and had complaints - like random rebooting and whatnot)

Thank you strangerthanfiction48 for the detailed explanation. Reading between the lines, I guess what you are saying is that this telephone is a good buy regardless of the WCDMA issue.

A few more questions:

1- Will a software upgrade be able to change the WCDMA from 2100 to 1900 - in the event that it ever comes out?

2- Has anyone deployed WCDMA 1900 here, or do you know of a "reasonable" timetable for the implementation of this technology in the USA?

3- Any talk about using 2100 in the USA?

Chances are that if the implementation of WCDMA is a few years away, by that time some of us will be in the market for a new telephone.

Thank you.

your very welcome. Everyone on this site and forum for all of phonescoop is always very helpful even if just asking the right questions. I know ive gotten some of my answers that i coulnd't find anywhere else from someone on this site. Now, to the further questions-

Software upgrades will not help picking up 1900, thats a hardware issue. Just like if you get a phone that only has tri band GSM 900/1800/1900, you cant really do much to get it to pick up 850.

Cingular does have somewhat of a 3G network deployed that are in the US frequencies, however, it isn't very extensive... Ive heard more than my share of complaints with how we are behind on this, and Cingular is looking in the right direction but not quite there. T-Mobile is strongl...

Very knowledgeable and thoughtful reply..may I ask if in your opinion it is worth the wait for the new "internet edition" to purchase this phone? It seems like Nokia is advertising this upgraded edition to be available shortly.

hhmmm... i dunno. I guess if you're this close and it doesn't kill you to wait it couldn't be a terrible thing to wait for it so long as it does come out this month or at least next month maybe. What I'm thinking is that Nokia isn't going to abandon those who it sold the "regular" N80's to by not providing a firmware/software upgrade, so even if you did get it right now, as I already have one of course, we can probably plan on having this available to us sometime soon as well?? Not 100% positive, but a good stab at a guess.... Anyways, the main differences i would worry about is the WiFi wizard and the software for the VoIP stuff to make life in that range possibly easier on some. All the other stuff you can get on your own anyways - namely ...

I appreciate your response and will evaluate accordingly. As of now, I think this is the better telephone in the market. I will wait, though, for the upgraded version that is supposed to come out any time this month.

Thank you.
