ok, so i have the n80 and guess what. the stereo bluetooth - specifically the HST850 Motorola bluetooth stereo headphones, WORKS! The SUPER strange thing is though, it only half a$$ works?!? The music plays in mono through the headphones. Cellular concepts researched it and said yes the headphones work and the phone is capable as even some other third party phone carriers claimed as well, only they couldn't get it to play in stereo and it sounds like crap for them as well. So here's the question - HOW in the HECK does the stereo bluetooth headphones even work if the phone isn't supposed to be compatible with it and why would it only work in mono and not stereo? Is there some sort of setting, or adapter, or different stereo b.t. headphones th...

OK, the n80 does not support A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution). The only nokia that currently DOES support A2DP (stereo bluetooth) is the 8801.
(specs from http://www.nokiausa.com/phones/N80/0,7747,fea t:1,00.html)

The HST850 as all Stereo Headphones are backwards compatible. Hence your n80 is transmitting the data to your HST850 using the old mono "Headset" bluetooth profile (which sounds like crap).

It is the same as if you connected your n80 to a regular 1 ear bluetooth headset and jammed to your tunes (which is what I do with my 6682).

No but see, i also have a v3i... and if you connect the headphones to that and play the itunes on the phone, nothing at all plays - which is supposed to happen when your phone doesn't support A2DP. It isn't supposed to play music when you dont have the profile as part of the phone.

One more thing to consider, is that everyone has something different to say when it comes to this N80 specifically. On the bottom of the Nokia website for the n80 it says that the phone was made in specification to meet bluetooth 2.0 standards. Also, if you go to mobile burn or gsm arena it says the phone has bluetooth 2.0 with stereo bluetooth compatibility. However, if you call Nokia customer service (whom i definitely would believe) and this website phonesc...

"No but see, i also have a v3i... and if you connect the headphones to that and play the itunes on the phone, nothing at all plays"

That's because Nokia is the only manufacture I know that sends all audio to a BT headset.

Anyone ever notice that with Nokia BT phones, whatever ringer you have assigned, you hear through BT when a call comes in. On a Moto, SE Samsung etc, all you hear when a call comes in is a beep in the headset.

If you take the same BT headset you paired to the v3i and pair it with either my 6230 or 6682, and play an mp3, you will hear sound throug the BT headset, not hi quality stereo, but mono. I also paired my Moto ht820 headset with both, the music comes to both ears, but again, not quality stereo.

Im just PRAYING for a firmware update for this n80 so they can make it compatible with WAYFINDER software and perhaps add in that A2DP like they were albe just recently to do with the MDA/WizardII, and get those headphones of ours to work!

OK, maybe you misunderstood me. I am not asking or suggesting that your n80 is using a "Handsfree" or "Headset" profile (which are both 8bit mono audio)....I am informing you that this is what is in fact happening.

The n80 was originally anounced by Nokia to have the A2DP profile. This was later changed, hence why some other websites might still have it listed as having stereo bluetooth.

Check out http://www.robertwebbe.nl/A2DP.html for an in depth review of what devices are tested to have a2dp. You MIGHT be able to get a2dp using the famous plug-in "MSI BluePlayer", but this will only work for i.Tech devices using the BluePlayer program.

Do a search on google for "nokia a2dp 8bit mono plugin" and you'll find this good reference ...
