At this time, North American cell-phones operate only on the 850/1900 MHz bands for all traffic. Most of the rest of the world is on 900/1800 MHz for GSM, and 2100 for 3G WCDMA. In the USA the 2100 band is not available, and 3G WCDMA (UMTS/HSDPA) is only supported by Cingular on 1900 MHz (they are in the process of adding 3G on 850 MHz). Thus the 2100-band on new phones is useless in North America (and may cause additional battery-drain if active!).

The N80 only supports WCDMA on 2100, and Nokia has shown no signs of actually adding support for 1900 (originally it was expected they would). They ARE coming out eventually with the N75, with specific support for 850/1900 WCDMA for the North American market, and which Cingular now insists on for their 3G phones. Also some other manufacturers are starting to ship tri-band 850/1900/2100 WCDMA "3G world phones".
