Nokia E61 Internet access with Cingular

Good Day everyone,

I shall appreciate your pertinent comments concerning the Nokia E61 internet access. I am in the final stages of ordering unlocked E61, however, was advised by my Cingular business rep that even with unlocked version I wouldn't be able to access the internet on E61, since Cingular system would recognize IMEI # along with make and model of the phone and would block any internet traffic. Can you please advise whether it is true, as it is very important for me to access the internet on the device.

Thank you.

I tried out an [unlocked, non-Cingular] E61 for a couple of weeks on my Cingular service and had no problems. I simply popped in my SIM, setup the internet service, and it worked fine. I did return the phone mainly due to its poor implementation of IMAP. However, if you don't use IMAP I believe its a great phone.

I have an unlocked version of this phone and have tried to use cingulars Internet service and I am not able to, however cingular will be coming out with a watered down version of this phone soon, which means that when they come out with it you should be able to download the software for the cingular version of the phone onto your unlocked phone and be able to use cingulars Internet access. as for all the other features I have had no problem, the Internet and the push to talk feature are the only two features that I am unable to use on this phone, the wireless Internet on the phone is amazing though!

The E61 should work fine on Cingular's network. You can configure it over the air using:

I was able to use IMPA with no problem at all. It even allowedme to download specific folders from the Mail Exchange Server. The only thing that I havent configured yet is the IM feature.

You'll find that their IMAP implementation is very poor. They attempt to use the IDLE command (which is great), but when the conenction is dropped (ie, you move into a non-coverage area) it is not picked back up again when you re-enter coverage. Also, there doesn't seem to be a mechanism to download the message (in addition to the headers) body and as soon as a message is opened, it has to download the text.

I originally did not believe in the response given to you by Cingular, but read this: I received my unlocked E61 last Saturday. I immediately plugged in my Cingular SIM and loaded data settings profiles fron nokia. I could NOT access internet using CINGULAR INTERNET access point settings downloaded from Nokia.com. I could sometimes have internet with CINGULAR WAP but the service was very intermittent. Furthermore, I was not able to hear this familiar buzzing noice on my speakers at all. I determined 850Mhz was not working. Inspired by your post I called Cingular to ask if I had to register my new IMEI. I told them I bought an E61. They said no need to register new IMEI, BUT when I got to work I started getting this familiar buzzing noice on ...

I've just bought an unlocked E61, I'm using it with a Cingular pay-as-you-go card (because I'm only on a brief visit to the US). My problem is that internet access always defaults to MediaNet, even when I have access to a wifi hotspot. I've set up access points for wifi, but they seeem to be overridden by MediaNet, which is ridiculously expensive. I've tried to use it like a wifi-equipped laptop by removing the SIM card, but then it won't connect at all - can anyone correct me or help me set up direct wifi connections, independent of Cingular?
thanks for any suggestions

Update to my original post:
I can connect to a wifi access point if I remove the SIM card, scan for a WAN and set it up as an access point - but as soon as I put the SIM back in, it ignores the access point and tries to connect through a MediaNet dialled connection. I suppose this means Cingular are doing some sorcery in the SIM card.
This method is a partial solution, but it's a bit of a pain to keep switching the SIM in and out - would appreciate any other solutions
thanks
