The reason they don't use cameras in their phones is because they want to make sure it stays as a business device, rather than a fun camera phone like every other phone out there.

The blackberry was made for the business sector, and has decided that high up people are their demographic. If you think about it, cameras aren't allowed into sensitive areas, and blackberries seem to be the only phone that have a lot of advanced features that doesn't have a camera. Just a thought...

though this doesn't really explain why they haven't made even ONE phone with a camera my old RIM rep always said it was because of the high percentage of customers who are government (department of defence) employees who cannot have a camera

Think about it. In a vertical market where you make one sale with a government rep and sell 10,000 devices, the numbers make you cater to those markets.

The blackberry doesn't sell very often to regular end-users because their main selling points include secure access to corporate email.

Very few of those paranoid about secure access to corporate email will want a camera anyway... see the resons in earlier posts.

These are the reasons that the "business device" will probably not ever have many if any devices with such a toyish feature.

there are several devices out where they release a camera and non-camera version (i.e. treo). i'm sure it would be just as easy for rim to do the same thing. in fact, it would probably make the product a little bit more appealing. i don't know where this elitist idea came from regarding rim devices, the treo has probably had more response from "higher up people" than any of the recent blackberry's have.

i think the biggest reason for them not have a camera is that there is some sort of difference in the screens images. i am not familiar with resolutions for phones, so i cannot even try to speculate on the specific differences, but the images on the rim devices are always grainy and blocky compared to the competitions images. it almos...

jiesus,

We use RIM because it is a secure way to interact with corporate email servers. Treo simply doesn't offer that to the level that RIM does at this time.

Customers who need access to corporate email are usually vertical market business people. Thus, very large companies. Many of these companies have specific policies BANNING cameras as we are not allowed to take them in certain government facilities.

Cameras on phones are nice toys, but they are a deterrent to every corporate account I have been involved with.

I like the idea that treo 650 has, putting two different versions out there... one with and one without a camera. But the fact is, in our corporate world, only a small handful of people have a legitimate business need...

haha...i dont understand this elitism towards cameras...as if cameras are solely for novelty purposes. thats a very simple minded view - and all you've done is reitterate what has already been said

it does not explain why there is not a choice i.e. the treo (how the email functions is irrelevant on this topic)

not everyone in the "corporate world" have super secretive wanna-be spy jobs that prohibit cameras. and not only corporate folk use blackberries services.

so the question goes back to, why is there not an option for a camera?

"we" would like one

I currently work for a major service provider. Blackberry devices are my favorite device to sell.

The reason why Blackberry devices do not come with a camera is because RIM does not care if you need a camera or not. It's for business professionals who need a phone for business purposes that do not require the use of a camera: if a camera is needed, get a 6MP digicam.

To be honest with you all, I think the 8125 is is much more useful anyway.

Although I'm probably not getting at the missing point, the fact of the matter is that if you want a blackberry with a camera, then forget about it...
