Does anyone know if the unlocked version of the new RAZR V3i will work with the old AT&T service?
It is my understanding that old AT&T service users are not using the same towers as actual Cingular customers. I do not want to switch to Cingular since it will be a downgrade of my plan but I would like be able to use the V3i.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Is it really true that old AT&T service users are not using the same towers as Cingular customers? I have heard about this from a Cingular representative and he told me I would probably have better reception if I migrate to Cingular. I m not sure if I should trust him tho. Sorry about branching out your topic... 😛

The old AT&T (Cingular Blue) towers are gradually being taken down & redistributed to areas where Cingular (Orange) coverage could be improved. There is also an integration going on of the existing networks (it's about 40% done, last I heard), so that in some areas, it won't matter whether you've got AT&T or Cingular. In other areas, though - the network integration is being done differently (don't ask me why), so that the Blue network (TDMA & GSM both) is being shut down completely & service. That hasn't happened in any market yet (at least not on GSM, TDMA is another story), but it might by the end of the year. In some areas (don't even begin to ask), there WILL be massivly improved coverage, in others, it won't matter at all.

Do you know if there could be any issue in using the V3i with AT&T sim cards since they're 32-bit vs. Cingular's 64-bit?
It sounds like all old AT&T customers will soon be forced to switch to Cingular Orange. I wonder if that means that they will make us any nice plan offers or just try to force feed us their cookie cutter plans.
Thanks!

I have a blue family plan (former ATT)right now. One of my sons has the V3i, and another son has the new SLVR. No problem at all with our phones or service.
The phones are unlocked, so if we ever decide to migrate, or go to another cellular provider, we'll be able to use the phones with several other providers.

Was it necessary to configure any special settings or just pop in the sim card and it was ready to go?
Thanks!

Unlocked phones should have no problem working with any GSM network, though you may have to experiment with the WAP settings to get mobile internet & MMS working.
To clarify: the old AT&T Wireless WILL be taken down, but not yet, I'd guess not before the end of the year. However, for the customers that are being forced to migrate, there will indeed be incentives offered (bonus minutes, further discounts on equipment, etc.)

To corret the misinformation this post has spread, The at&t wireless (GSM) network is not being "taken down" there were once "blue" (former at&tws) towers and "orange" (cingular pre merger) towers. These are being integrated to create "gold" (cingular as one company post merger) towers. The only GSM towers being taken down are in situations where the local network is being consolidated to gold, and there is a blue tower right next to an orange tower. one will be taken down and moved to another location that currently has poor coverage or no coverage. Since the network is being consolidated both former att cusotmers and cingular cusotmers could use this "gold" tower there will be no difference to the customers signal.

Does that mean that former AT&T WS customers will be able to stay on their current plans with AT&T and use the new gold network or would they be forced to switch to Cingular?
Thanks.

I can't say an answer to that question that I can guarentee is 100% correct. But the current answer to that question is yes, in fact cingular is moving the former attws customers into the cingular billing systems, and keeping them on the same plans they signed up for as blue customers. At this time there is no plan to force anyone over as long as they have a working device. I cannot say what will happen in the future as it is impossible to know, but for the time being (as of 03/28/2006) all blue cusotmers should be able to stay on their same plans and their coverage (while it may decrease for a little bit) should only get better as the network is consolidated. The estimated time to have this done is by the end of 2006. So far Cingular has no...

Cingular has said that by 2008, the Legacy network [Old AT&T] will no longer exist. So pretty much that network by that time will be shut down completely.

But that doesn't mean that Blue customer's plans will go away. Once the integration is complete then there will be no difference in service between Blue and Orange. Blue customers will just be like people with really old plans.

All we had to do was pop the Sim cards in, since we don't use Mmode on our phones. All we do is voice and text. I know it's not difficult to get the Mmode settings for blue accounts, though.
By the way, the V3i is really nice. So is the SLVR.

I am an AT&T customer still AND my contract just ran out and I called them to cancel my service and they are making really, really sweet deals to keep me and move me over... But I am kinda wanting to wait now and see what else they might offer and what new technology comes out.
But so you know they offered to give me any two phones out of the line up (except the smart phones of course, any regular phones) for free! Even the two 3G phones they have in the line... We'll see what I decide.

Did the make you any offers on plans (e.g. bonus minutes, etc) or just on the phones?
