I heard if 'something happens' to my v3i after the v3x is released, and i pay the $50 to get a new phone, they send the new model. is this true? has anyone done something like this in the past?

Nope, you'd get the same phone you had before. If they were out of stock of RAZRs, they'd send you the closest equivalent. IF the V3i Had been out a while, AND there were no regular V3s left, and there there plenty of refurb V3is around, then maybe, but otherwise, you'd just get what you had before.
