T809 Vs....

Neoprimal

Dec 14, 2005, 10:16 PM
In light of this mechanical cellphone disaster, I'd let to get some opinions on my next cell phone.

Tmobile has nothing I'd want at the moment. I can't settle for the Razr again (great phone but the lack memory and mp3 player)

I really like the mpx220 as my next phone so we'll see. But I'd also like some recommendations for good phones.

My requirements:

Extended memory (minisd/transflash)
Bluetooth
UNLOCKED Mp3 ringtones
Mp3 player
Voice Dialing

I'd also like it to use miniusb connectors rather than proprietary but that's not a requirement. And I'd rather a clamshell or slider. I really don't like brick phones.

Look at the RAZR V3i. It fits most of what you want.

Oh I know. The V3i or V3x would be optimal answers, but I would never, ever, ever purchase a phone for more than 300....and so far those are going for 4 and 500 on ebay and I need a phone now, not in 6 months when they are fully released and actually come down in price.

Look up the Motorola V360 upgrade price + 2-year is $100 less then the T809 last I checked.

The v360 is ugly imo 😕

Neo, do you want to stay with t-mobile or are you looking to port your number with a different carrier (if their phone is right)?

Heya. I'm stuck on Tmobile, not by contract but they're customer service is impeccable and they've never let me down. Not to mention I get unlimited data/text/mms/ims, etc. Something no other carrier has. So, no, not willing to port for a phone.

As for the V360 - After I sold my V3 that's what I got. It's a nice phone but I can't get over the extenal monochrome screen. I frankly don't understand WHY they would do such a thing, it's such a nice phone. My other problem with it is that the mp3 didn't play much of my music right, it'd play the song perfectly and 1/2 or 3/4 way in it'd stop with the message "failed to play" or something. Otherwise, it was OK. Like a nicer V600.

I am trying to decide between V360 and T809, the one thing that bothers me about the V360 is the monochrome second display also. T809 the only thing I can pick at is the no email client, but its a feature that I would not use since I have access to a computer for emails and if its urgent enough the person calls me 🙂

I dumped my v360 for the t809 -- the v360 has the worst bluetooth stack imaginable. My attempts to get it to work as a bluetooth modem or a USB dongle modem were worthless. T-Mobile spent around 16 hours trying to figure it out.

The t809 hooked up in seconds (I'm posting from a laptop tied into the t809 right now).

Does it crash frequently? My v600 will crash at least once a month without fail.

Have you tried this guys suggestion for MP3 ring tones for the T809?

And what's the big deal with not having voice dial? If that was the one thing a phone didn't have could you live without it. I know my dad loves voice dial and it's one of his requirements. Just wondering. 🙂

Hey, I returned the phone already. Just isn't worth 300 dollars and after a week I ran out of patience and found multiple faults in the phone. It could have just been my phone - I had bad bluetooth quality and in mass storage mode the phone didn't work as a usb drive. Things that couldn't be changed are the fact that the keys are small and I had to always be careful dialing, also hit the clear key alot trying to hit 'send', 'end' or the down directional pad. I also hated the menu system.

Well, at least you got your money back. 😁

You did get a full refund right? I never returned a phone, but my understanding was that if you return it undamaged within 14 days you get a full refund. Is that true?

I did. I'm happy for that and Thank goodness I didn't ebay it 🙂

My money's now on an unlocked Motorola MPX220 that I got for 200 brand new. They supposedly have a few bugs, but I'm positive it'll be nowhere as disappointing as the T809. And it's 100 less with lots more features, so I'm good to go.

I heard the MPX220 was extremely buggy. Also that the voice volume was poor. ☚ī¸

Seems like the T809 is riddled with problems. I think I'll skip this one. I really like the v360 which would be perfect if it was quad band since I travel globally. Wish T-Mobile would come out with a razr or pebl with Edge or some equivalent, or start making more quad band phones generally.

Any advice on a T-Mobile forum. I am actually thinking about switching back to Verizon and using my blackberry for international calls.

I've never had a problem with a Tri-band for international calls - but maybe we travel to different countries. As for Verizon, I think it's a matter of what you want really. If Tmo doesn't have the featurelist or the tech. you need, then switch back. For me, Ver and Cin. just aren't options because I want unlimited text/mms/ims for less money. With Cin it's 20+20, with Ver. there's no such thing. Sprint/Nextel would work, but I don't like their service or plans. I'm also out of a contract and like being free 🙂. The thought of jumping into a 2 year contract with anyone is a bad idea for me. If you need those things NOW, then go for it. If it's just the international calls, then just buy an unlocked phone from a reputable store. Tmobile works...

I actually asked a T-mo rep about T-mobile's plans for 3G. The rep told me that T-mo plans on waiting it out for a little bit because they want to keep costs down for themselves. Also, they want to see how well the US responds to Cingular's 3G network as well as Verizon's EV-DO. So in all probability T-mo won't get 3G for at least another year.

That's correct. They've already built some infrastructure - they're executing an alpha test right now and a beta test of 3G by early to mid 2K6. Depending on what works, they should roll it out in most metro areas and highly populated places by 2007. All we have to wait to see is what they'll be using as their 3G network....
