Good afternoon everyone. Please pardon the subject line, however, I have not received proper advice from VZW on this subject, so I thought I would ask my peers.

So here's my question. I am not much of a blackberry type guy, however, I am a pocket pc fanatic. I truly cant live without my pocket pc, and as of late, have not been able to get away from email (work issues) .

I understand there are two types of devices available to me through VZW. (excluding the blackberry) A pocket pc or smart phone. I would like to know which type of device I should be looking at, a smart phone or pocket pc. My email activity has increased over the past year, and it is necessary that I have 24/7 access to email both on the road and in the office. I also wo...

You definitely want to look at the treo 700w as it has windows mobile 5 which is the newest pocket pc OS. It will operate the same as your pocket pc as well as give you wireless access to email and wireless high speed internet access. It also has MS word, excel, and power point.

Hi there!

The older Treos running Palm OS are SmartPhones because they have PDA functionality and are phones, but are not "smartphones" in the Microsoft sense (you have to love Microsoft, they take a word and try to change definition to meet their marketing needs). Currently there are no phones offered through Verizon that run the current Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone software. The last phone that they offered was the Samsung SCH-i600, which ran Windows Mobile 2003.

You can read a very short summary of the differences between Pocket PC and Smartphone on the Windows Mobile FAQ:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/about/faq.mspx#2 »

There are several phones the VZW offers running WM5 Pocket PC, like the Treo 700w, the xv6600, ...

You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. Firstly, the i730 does NOT have WM5. It has windows mobile 3 second edition. Secondly, the Treo 700w IS a windows mobile 5 Pocket PC smartphone. You may want to learn something about the topic before you start spouting off showing how much you DON'T know.

SForsyth01, sorry I was definitely wrong on that. You are right, the i730 and the xv6600 both run Windows Mobile 2003 instead of WM5. I wanted to say that the phones I mentioned ran Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition.

However, I do want to reiterate that the Treo 700w runs Windows Mobile 5 for Pocket PC and not Windows Mobile 5 for smartphone. It actually even says that in the Info and Specs page of this website.

Phones that run some kind of OS like Linux, PalmOS, some form of Symbian, or a Microsoft OS derived from Windows CE, (like Pocket PC 2002, Windows Mobile 2003, or Windows Mobile 5) are all "smart phones". From a Microsoft perspective, there is a definite difference between Windows Mobile for Smartphones and Windows Mob...

You are now absolutelt correct in using Microsoft's definition. However, that may cause some confusion. While you are correct, the carriers refer to any phone that has PDA functionality (ability to sync with a computer) as a smartphone. My box for my treo says smartphone on it even though that is not how microsoft wants it referred to as.

I have a treo 650 and 6700. The 650 is satisfactory, but the 6700 is superior t othe 650, or any other smartphone/pocket pc that I've had or seen.
