Whats up with Active Sync?

Ok, so I finally managed to sync up my Treo to my XP desktop (but not my Win 2000 notebook ☹️ ) and everything is working fine.

My problem is on the handheld. Active Sync always seems to be running in the background. Everytime I close it out and run something else (like the messenging app or IE) it comes back on and runs in the background again. It's using resources that I don't want it to use. Is this a bug in WM 5.0 or a bug in the Treo? It drives my crazy cuz I'm always checking my system memory now.

Has anyone had this problem?

MICROSOFT activesync 4.1 is a constant background program. Its programmed by MICROSOFT to be that way, not a bug. If your worried about it uses resources cause its slowing your system down, you might want to think about upgrading your PC to something more modern.

Ive successfully with no issues got it to work on Win2k pro, 2K adv server, XP Pro. If you have a software firewall it can block the ports needed for it to sync, check the microsoft KB it tells you which ones to open.

Ok...that's probably gonna solve my Win 2000 problem...but the problem I'm having is on the Treo it self. Active sync is always running in the background. Without being prompted to. I don't have over the air sync'ing enabled so I don't think it's that.

It will run in the background of windows mobile 5 once you sync and will not go away unless manually closed. Any program you open in WM5 will stay open til you manually close it, unlike the palm OS.

Holding down the OK button brings up a 'running programs list'. Right now my list is showing me Calendar, ActiveSync, and Text messages. From here I should be able to "close" out these programs by either stopping them one by one, or all at the same time.

My problem is, that Calendar and Text messages should be running cuz I opened those apps. I did NOT open active sync...AT ALL today. Why is it running then? And why, after I close it out, does it reappear in my 'running programs list' when it should not be running? No other program automatically appear like that.

This is a feature (bug!) of the Windows Mobile OS, BUT there is a fix!!!

Some Treo 700w owners have had issues with activesync running in the background, ranging from the phone not being able to power up from sleep when the end button is pressed, to the 700w not recognizing Wi-Fi and memory cards.

Below is a link to the fix. While it references an Axim phone, it applies to the 700w WM OS as well. Just follow the easy instructions, and voila, no more active sync running in the background!
