I love cell phones and all but, it appears that I am not up on the specs as much as I could be. Would someone please tell me what firmware is? ๐Ÿคจ

Hard coded software in an electronic device. On devices with flashable ROM (read only memory) it can be flashed, which is upgrading to newer software.

Basically a progam that makes your phone work. Makes an electropnic device work for that matter. All your menus, buttons etc. are controlled by an internal software. This is written on what is called a ROM (Read Only Memory). And does exactly that. Once you put the software into the ROM, you can only read off it. You cannot change the software. Since it is written to a "non-erasable" chip, they call if FIRMWARE.
When you do a "firmware upgrade" that might sound contradictary - how can you upgrade something that is not changable you may ask. Well, we call it ROM, but it actually a EEPROM (Electronically Erasable & Programmable Read Only Memory).
