Dial-up Internet?

RyanS107

I just ordered this phone, I currently have a v710 with which I can use my PDA and dial the #777 number to get "dial-up" internet access. Can this be done with the 6700 for Verizon? I do not want to pay the $25 or even $45 a month for broadband internet. The dial-up speed will work just fine. Can this be accomplished without subscribing to a data plan? Thanks in advance!

No. Not even with a plan can you use it as a modem. The only pda this works with is the XV6600 and you would then be on pay as you go data for $0.015/per KB or a regular data plan.

But even on the XV6000, how do they know if you are on a pay as you go or anything? Like i said, I used my v710 "as a modem" to dial the #777 number and do not get data bills per KB or anything. I cannot use my v710 to dial an ISP, only Verizon's #777 number.

I will know more tomorrow when i get my phone and i will try it myself, i just dont see how I could not setup a Connection with #777 as the number to dial just as i do on mu ipaq.

Ryan, I am interested in how you make out with this. I too am interested in an XV6700 or Treo700 and currently use a Pocket PC and laptop with my E815. Never been charged extra from Verizon. I have been doing this since my v710 18 months ago.

I was at the Verizon store today and looked at the dial up connection settings on the i730 and Treo 700. Both used the same #777 dial up settings that we use on our own devices with our 815 and 710. So I am guessing the XV6700 will be the same. I would like to get this 6700 and not pay for a plan. The only thing I would be missing out on is the sync option to my desktop outlook. But I would rather pay $5 a month for a hosted exchange account to do the sync over the internet.

I have had a 6700 for about a week. I tried the Treo 700w and didn't like the screen.
I have a plan that gives me 1400 minutes for $79 bucks, and that comes bundled with a $30 unlimited data plan.

When I was trying to get the data plan hooked up on the Treo, there was a glitch in the system and it was blocked until I called customer support & got it fixed. The device was dialing #777 and I did have the user name & password in place- so I guess you can't get broadband just by using your airtime minutes.

The phone must have an active data plan. Your options are:

$0 = pay as you go 0.015/KB
$24.99 = 20MB then 0.005/KB
$44.99 = Unlimited

These options are not counting the unlimited data combined with a voice plan options.

Pay as you go can be added to a handset but shouldn't. I did however see it once and the customer got a $1500 bill though they didn't have to pay most it.

This pay as you go is just in theory and possibly a scare tactic by Verizon. I have yet to hear from anyone claiming to pay per kb on their bill. Since you work for Verizon, I am not certain who's side you are rooting for. But if anyone out there has ever received a bill where they were charged per kb and had no data plan, I would like to see it. In the past 18 months I have been using this forum and my V710 and E815 to access the internet, I have never seen any proof this occurs. Nor, has Verizon officially billed me or harrassed me. I would like just one person out there to scan a copy of their bill (black out your personal info and account # of course) and post it in a link for all of us to see. The proof will be in the puddding. But unti...

I am just telling you outright that a PDA phone is required by the billing system to have a data plan feature. A regular handset does not require this because that's not the primary function.

I dont think thats entirely true. I asked a Verizon salesperson if I can buy the phone with just voice service and he said I can. Now the Phone will cost $399 with a 2 yr voice plan, $449 with a 1 year voice plan, and $499 with no plans at all. At minimum I would not lock down EVER to a 2 yr contract. So that would mean I would pay $449 for the phone. I am now tempted to just pay an additional $50, pay $499, keep my existing plan, and use my minutes to access the internet. Or I cna opt to pay $45 a month for data and have 1 or 2yr contract. Cancel anytime.

All PDA's must have a data feature. You are on old pricing that they grandfather so you are stil using minutes.

Even if you keep your old voice plan you must choose a data feature. If you chose pay as you go you will be charged for all data.

I can back up what Data king is saying. if you are on an old plan, or using your cell phone to access the dial up network chances are you wont be billed. HOWEVER if you are using a PDA there HAS TO BE some sort of data package added. With the 6700 you have the discounted plans available with certain voice plans, or 44.99, or pay as you go, and if you chooose pay as you go YOU WILL BE CHAGED, i have seen it and it can get very expensive. If you dont think so, try it yourself, and post what happens. Also as far as people using your phone as a modem, VZW is tracking this. I myself had my data features turned off and had to call back and practically beg to have them turned back on. I also had another friend who had the same thing happen to...

FYI,

This is NOT competitive pricing. Sprint offers the Power Vision package for the 6700 with Unlimited EVDO access for $15 a month.
