I bought this phone for the same purpose as you (the reason was that my old phone broke and I need a new one for the time-being). The dealer at the Cingular shop said you can buy the GoPhones and just put your SIM card from your current phone into the GoPhone, and it will work without any configuration. It seems they were correct, as I've made about 5 calls so far without any trouble.
Pity I had to spend $60 on a phone to get me through the last 4 months of my contract, but, oh well; it's the cell phone business. You're gonna get screwed one way or the other.
