I left a similar comment in the thread below, but has anyone had good/bad experiences buying unlocked phones, factory direct (or from a retailer). What is the advatage of waiting for a carrier to release this phone? It is already available (and well reviewed on howardforum.com).
It is certainly expensive from the retailer listed on this site, but for the amount of travel I do on my job it is worth it (if it works well).

bandwidth and ip, wap, mms are the most common problems you will have with unlocked phones.

Will those functions not work with a factory unlocked phone?...or just underperform?
What causes the problems you have listed?
Thanks for the help.
I'm in desperate need of this phone or one similar and the carriers are being very slow to release them (QTEK 9100, Nokia 9300, Q, etc.)

I just received my unlocked Qtek 9100. This is the third unlocked phone I've purchased this year, and I've not had any problems using all of the features on any of them. I'm using an AT&T Sim, and the only call I had to make to support was to get the GPRS setting (username "proxy" with no password). Similar luck with a Nokia 9500 on T-Mobile (all settings download automatically from T-Mobile) and with an SE 910a on AT&T (The settings are all availabole for auto-download from the SE web-site). BTW, the 9100 is very slick, and I'll post a review after using it for a week.

Thanks for the info...I think I'll stop waiting for Cingular to release and just get one. I'll keep an eye out for your review...that will help too.
I was waiting for the Nokia 9300 as well, but switched to this one because the wi-fi might be useful from time to time...I've just noticed they are releasing a wi-fi 9300. They keep dangling phones I want just out of my reach.
Thanks again.

Yes, the 9300 looks slick. I found that the EDGE on the 9500 had data rates that were acceptable for e-mail, but a bit slow for web-surfing. The WiFi on the 9500, while faster than the EDGE, is slow for WiFi. The 9500 has a brilliant screen, and I wanted one since I am an old Psion user (Psion's operating system is the pre-cursor of Symbion). But for ease-of-use, Windows Mobile 5 beats Symbion hands-down, specially if you're syncronizing with an exchange server. The reason I jumped on the Wizard is that it's size makes it the 1st Pocket-PC form-factor that makes it useful as a phone (I've also had the Siemens SX56 and the HP 6315).

Do you have any recommendations for retailers...anyone you've felt comfortable buying from? The retailer listed on this site is the most expensive...I've seen others with this phone for $650 (although I rather pay the higher price for a more reputable seller).

From what I read and saw, Dave at Mad Monkey Boy has about the best prices and is reliable. I got mine for $699 with no problems. Try http://www.dweiniger.com/index.shtml.

It is a little different for this particular phone. In Europe where the phone is available under different names: Qtek 9100, i-Mate K-Jam, XDA Mini-S, MDA Vario etc price is significantly lower with a contract in some places (UK) current price of XDA Mini S is only 49 GBP (about $90) with a contract. You can flash it to be a Qtek 9100 (not many features but fast) or i-Mate K-Jam (loaded with soft like Skype, PDF reader etc.) but slow. You can get software at XDA-developers site. BTW unlocking soft is available there for FREE....

carrier ver
+: warranty, insurance will be honored, carrier-specific features (like UMA for T-Mobile ver), discounted price for new customer (or existing customer who is willing to sign a refreshed contract)
-: some features may be removed, SIM locked (though it's easy to get unlock instruction from T-Mobile for their version devices)
non-branded ver
+: can be used on almost ALL GSM service, you can get features which is supposed to be
-: support, warranty, and insurance may not be honored, expensive

Those who know or used K-JAM phone, can you please tell me how do I dial? Unless I slide the key board out, there are no keys to dial. Another question I have is, if I buy an unlocked phone, can I put any carrier's SIM card in there and use with that carrier with the plan I have? (ex: Nextel i530)? Thank you.
