Don't let the charge run out?
A friend of mine told me that with these Windows SmartPhones, that you cannot let the charge die on the battery, else you will lose all the data on the phone that didn't originally accompany the phone out of the box.
Is this true? Does this only affect the internal memory, or also data/programs stored on the external memory card?

This used to be true on WM2003 devices but now on WM2005 devices you don't have to worry about it and if the battery dies only unsaved data will be erased.

One of the nice changes to Windows Mobile 5.0 is that NATIVE WM5 devices have flash memory instead of CMOS memory. What is the difference? Well with older PDAs and Windows-based smart devices (phones, etc.), in order to keep the memory "alive", a small trickle charge from the battery was used. That means even when your older PDA was "off", the battery was still being drained to keep the data in the PDA there. Most of these devices also had a small watch-battery type backup battery in case the main battery died, but even that was usually only good for a few hours at best.
