WiFi Woes

Why is connecting to a home network so damn difficult. I've owned 3 PPC devices and never got a one to use WiFi. Does any one have a step by step as with GPRS. I have searched every forum I am aware of. No reliable WiFi set up info.

Not all wireless access points/routers are the same. I have a Netgear router and an MDA. The phone will connect just fine using WPA, but not with WEP security.

Try several settings.

I have had no difficulties with regards to using the PPC and WiFi networks, you just have no know more about the settings than if you are used to using Windows XP.

Do you know what your SSID is?
Do you know your encryption method? Do you know what your WEP Key strength is? Is it shared or open? Do you know which Transmission key is used? Is your SSID being broadcast?

These sorts of settings aid getting connected with a PPC.

My suggestion? Go into a Starbucks and turn on your WiFi. If you cannot find their 802.11b signal, there may be something wrong with your device or a configuration setting, like having WiFi turned off (which is by default).

Thanks for everyone's help. I understand the technology, just haven't found the 'right' combination of settings for my device and Dlink network. It finds the network and displays the info, just not an IP!!!!????

I had the same problem but this is what I did. On your phone settings, go to connections > advanced >select networks. Where it says "programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using the following" change it to "My Work Network"
Then turn on the wifi on your phone. What this does is manually disable EDGE/GPRS and your wifi will take over. For some reason, having EDGE/GPRS turned on causes problems with WIFI connectivity. You just have to remember to turn the EDGE/GPRS back when you don't have wifi signal. Hope this helps

I had issues as well with wi-fi connecting. It was always wanting to use GPRS/EDGE instead. I found some info, can't remember where, but it works, so figured I'd relay the msg.

1. Start / Settings / Connections Tab / Connections / Advanced Tab / Select Networks

2. Media Net (if using Cingular) is already in the box to ber used for programs that automatically connect to the internet. Choose the "My ISP" setting to enable Wi-Fi as your choice of connection.

3. After you choose "My ISP", click OK, and OK again, then X out.

Then when turning on your wi-fi by the com button, you should be connecting to the wireless network.

To return to your Cingular internet settings just repeat the steps and choose "Media Net" or whichever ...

Isn't there either a 3rd party or built in way for the 8125/MDA to use a prioritized list to connect? Say, use my home Wifi connection if it's found first, then show me another Wifi connection if you can't find my home network, and finally if no Wifi is available use GPRS connection?

This seems like it'd be entirely useful!

K, here's my route that I take, make sure we're on the same lines.

I go to, start/settings/connections - then click connections / click advanced / click select networks / change to My Isp / hit ok / ok again.

Go to comm manager, turn wi fi on.

Then back to start/settings/connections - then click wireless lan.

You should be seeing your signal strength, what not..

I hit menu - select network cards.

From here you'll see any wifi networks set up and the name of em.

Like my basic one at home is just "default" yeah creative I know.

If it's not already saying "connecting", hold your stylus on it and 2 options will arrive, "Connect" and "Remove Settings".. hit connect.

Also make sure at the bottom it says "Networks to acc...

In addition, it's sometimes good to do a soft reset as well.. sometimes your settings can get stuck on .. well.. hell I dunno.. but I've seen sometimes where I couldn't connect to Edge or something, then I soft resetted and all was well. ? 🙂

Are you certain you tried all the steps? Did you try this:

First, be sure to turn off your Wi-Fi radio (through the communications manager--be sure that Wi-Fi has a red X on it to indicate that it is off). If Wi-Fi is on when you make these changes, they will not work properly.

Next, Click Start | Settings | Connections Tab | Connections | Advanced Tab then click on Select Networks.

From there, you will have two pull-downs: one for Programs that automatically connect to the Internet and the other for connecting to a Private Network.

Presuming you've set up your Wi-Fi connection for the "Private Network", you will need to set your "Internet Connection" to the same connection as your "Private Network" connection (e.g. un-selecting ...

And you're sure that your Wi-Fi connection on the device is configured properly? Do you have a laptop or other device that is connecting wirelessly to your Wi-Fi network?

Another thing is that security may not be working properly if you have it enabled. While it's a bit of a pain to undo and then re-do later, if you have WEP or any kind of security turned on for your Wi-Fi router/access point, try turning it all off so it is completely open and then try connecting with your device.

The purpose of doing so is to establish what is the problem. If you still cannot connect with the system being entirely open/unsecured, then it's something about your connection configuration in the device that is probably the problem. If you can connect wi...

Another thing to try is to see if you can ping the device from your laptop or your desktop. If you cannot ping it, then you're not connected. If you can ping it, then you are connected and you are probably having DNS issues on the device. You might want to try entering the DNS address manually and see if that helps. I can't imagine what else it might be--especially when both my and my wife's 8125s connected pretty much as I expected them to.

Another thing you could try is to create a new connection from scratch and try that. Perhaps something might be wrong with the existing connection profile you are using.
