Great idea, but.....

Ok, while I'm not an iPod devotee(though I'm considering gettin' one as my current player is proving frustrating), I do actually think this is a great idea.....to start off with.

I say to start off with because this should by no means represent what can be done in this genre. A convergence device like this is something people have been after for a LONG time, and the iTunes/iPod name on it will definately help drive sales. BUT there are several things it needs to fully realize the potential it has.

First...a hard drive of some sort. Preferably a microdrive similar to the 5-6GB Seagate drives used in Rio's Carbon models. This allows a MUCH greater than 100 song limit while simultaneously preserving battery life.

Second...longer ba...

interesting you brought up the ota thing...like a wireless sync

def a good idea..something they probably will do
honestly i see verizon doing it first since they have a 3G evdo network out now that could probably support it better

then people will complain tho that verizon is just trying to make a quick buck...lose lose...or win win. haha

Like I tell people when they ask why phone cameras have such a low resolution, remember, it is a phone before it is anything else. They could do everything that you mentioned, but then it would be a lot higher in price and people will not want to pay for it; it would be more beneficial for them to just get a regular ipod.

In the case of the phone, you can go somewhere where you don't want to lug around a lot of things and not have to worry about bringing a separate device if you want to listen to some mp3's. In that case, 100 songs is definately enough.

Personally, I love having these extra features on my phone, but I don't expect too much because I am buying it mainly because it's a phone.

Also, I really don't think it is such a great idea right off the bat to use an actual hard drive in (atleast) the first gen of the ipod phone (and we know there will be more generations ala every other ipod) because i would have to see a lot of customers that would come into my store when their phone took a decent fall and now their hard drive died.

While i agree that they could have maybe used something else like removeable SD flash cards (allowing a lot more storage and hot swappable cards for almost unlimited storage) i think Flash memory in phones is still the way to go, seeing as phones are abused so badly by the average consumer...i see this daily.

Flash is the way to go with their phone, but maybe not the transflash that they us...

While I can definately see the bad in having a hard drive inside a phone (believe me, I get plenty of "my phone won't work" too), but for the purposes of truly making a convergence device one would be needed since something like 4GB of flash (think iPod nano) would be WAY too expensive.

My biggest gripe really is what I mentioned last. The fact that Cingular really isn't getting much more than good press from this. Good press that they already had with phones like the RAZR that appeals to a much larger demographic. Think about it, the RAZR attracts a LOT of people, young and old, and it's all looks. Most don't even know what Bluetooth or any of the other features do, they just think it looks hot so they want it. The ROKR's thing is t...
