Instead of using silent mode, I edited my MEETING profile to silence all key sounds. When using the MEETING profile I have no shutter sound. You'll find the PROFILES by pressing the MENU button then scrolling right and down to SETTINGS. Under the GENERAL tab you'll find PROFILES. Choose SELECT PROFILE and find the MEETING profile, you can then edit it or any other profile any way you want it to work.
While, we are on the subject of profiles, I created a new profile called NAP for when I need to get some sleep. I then edited the profile so that it is silent and refuses all calls EXCEPT for a few selected contacts in my contact list. Very handy!
