Possible Recall

It appears that the many people experiencing problems with this phone are finally being heard. I don't know the exact details, nor do I know the validity of the information, but it appears either Sony Ericsson or Cingular is possibly recalling the z520a (not to be confused with the z520i).

It's 1 AM, just got off from work, I'll try to find out official word tomorrow, if there is any.

The problem is a memory leak that sometimes causes the phone to freeze and can cause display problems. This problem hasn't been reported in all areas, and frankly is a rather minor one: it can be prevented by power-cycling the phone once per day or so (turning the phone off for 30 seconds or so, then turning back on). Cingular is expected to re-release a "fixed" version of the phone by Jan 23rd or so.

If you take the minimal time required to power-cycle the phone, I wouldn't worry about this issue. I have a 520a and haven't experienced any problems with it, nor am I planning on returning it.

Power cycling the phone at least once a day is not a solution to the problem. It's a workaround. A workaround is meant to be temporary until a real solution can be found and implemented. This is not a minor problem. Also, this problem is random enough that even if you power cycle your phone daily, it may not be enough to prevent the problem altogether.

There has been no official recall of the phone, but Cingular has stopped selling it for the time being. When my z520a is working, it's a great phone, and I really want to keep it, but I, as well as many others, have missed calls, and gone through these problems.

The biggest problem that most of us are having isn't even related to the phone. It's the denial by Cingular and SE reps.

The updated version of the phone should be available in 10 days. Some of the problems seem to be associated with specific ringtones - have you tried changing your ringtone(s)?

I agree that missing calls is not a minor issue. Hopefully I don't run into that problem with my phone. I've been very happy with it, and haven't even run into the hair-trigger camera button issue. Hope this is fixed soon.

It's not really specific ringtones, but rather it's noticed more by mp3 ringtones. This is generally because mp3 ringtones are larger than midi ringtones, so they display the symptoms much quicker. Trust me, I've done extensive testing on my phone so I what doesn't cause the problem.

RadioShack issued a recall today on the phone. We have been told not to expect replenishment on them until mid-late February. 👿

I'm not giving mine up since I plan on having it unlocked and updated soon.

I have seen minimal problems with the blank screen issue and such. I think once I got a new voicemail alert after the phone never rang. If it weren't for the known issues, I would consider once just a fluke. I still pretty much do. Of course, I haven't done too many crazy things. I don't have any extra ringtones downloaded yet, for instance.

I don't plan on getting rid of the Z520a. My GF has one too, we got them at same time on a shared plan, and we both like the phone very much (hers seems a bit less stable than mine). If a software update makes them more stable, that will be a bonus. We're well past the 30 days anyway, so it's all about warranty replacements or repairs or updates at this point.

I have uploaded my own mp3s and have not powered down since 2 weeks ago. I have not had any serious problems since. One time I had that lock-up that the phone was connected but could not hear anything, not even when people call the phone would not ring. I have pictures and have used bluetooth to do all my transfers. Not a dropped connection with BT. Calls I had a few, but I know its the location not the phone. If they do offer an upgrade for my pain and suffering of rebooting and flash of screen, then I will opt for the RAZR V3i with the megapixel camera and memory slot. 😁
