Like someone already stated, people in the US are cheaper than people elsewhere. They're willing to pay top dollar for a phone while most people here are more interested in seeing how cheap they can make that.

However, that ties into something else. In Europe and Asia, it's the manufacturers who are in charge. Here, they have to succumb to the whims of first the FCC and then the carriers. What that means is that if a phone were available for release on Jan 1st in both Europe and the US, there's a good chance that in Europe the phone would be on shelves by Jan 5th. In the US, the FCC would take a couple of months to approve it, then a carrier would spend a couple of months trying to figure out if it is worth them picking up.
