Would you trade the Moto 815 for the 970 Sammy?

I have the Moto 815. It is my third one! I took back the other two because of the AWFUL echo the person at the other end of the line gets when they talk to me. Verizon has no idea how to fix it. They just give me a new phone each time I go back to them and complain. Other than the echo problem with the 815, it works great; good reception, camera video, menus, battery, etc. There is no echo with the wired ear piece or just the handset alone. I often need the speaker feature and thus need to make a change. Is the Sammy 970 worth the money and will it deliver all that the Moto does minus the nasty echo? Thanks for the input everyone.

Stick with the E815. The E815 is hackable - you can use OBEX - not so on the Sammy.

I hear the a970 has already been having problems such as not being able to turn off unless the battery is pulled out. In addition, I hear it is difficult to open the phone with one hand because the flip stops at a 90 degree angle because of the rotating display.

I think the a950 is a better value and I also thinks it looks better. I also can't really justify paying another $150 for that phone.

I forgot to add...I will gladly take reasons (other than the camera and speech to text) as to why I should spend the extra $150 for the a970 over the a950 when my NE2 comes up on 11/29.

all good replys.......I sort of like the text mail feature on the 970.....but since I'm always getting my 4500 LG caught on everything,I didn't want a bigger phone than that....is the 970 in stores yet?....

When I shut down my 970 it has an amazing animation with sound effects. It's so cool I shut it off sometimes when I'm bored and then I cry tears of joy!

Let the above statement show that my 970 shuts off with no issues. I can personally confirm that I do not have a shut down problem with my phone. Maybe one or two others can post about their shutdown successes and it will help balance the perception of this phone.

It is really amazing what a couple comments can do to give a phone a bad reputation. I have read about two people having the shutdown problem. Not to say their aren't more but that is hardly a track record. Amazing.

I forgot to add that I can also open the phone with one hand AND without touching the screen! 🙂

Furthermore, the 90 degree position is great for listening to mp3s. I can set it on the desk and point it directly at myself.

For those you who have used both the 970 and 950 - forgetting the camera - are the phones basically equal as far as sound quality and reception?

I bought the 970 for myself and the 950 for my wife yesterday. I like the 950 a lot, but am exstatic about the 970. As far as I can tell, there doesn't seem to be any real differences other than what you describe. I really want to keep the 970, but I am very worried about scratching the camera lens. If I'm paying a $150 premium to get the better camera, the lens damn well better not get scrathed. It's to the point that I'm not comfortable putting the camera in my pocket, and I'm not to thrilled with the leather carrying case that can be perchased since it doens't protect the lens. Does anyone else have the same concern? If so, what is being done to protect the camera? I'm seriously thinking of returning it and getting the 950 and then saving...

Case is nice not the greatest,I don't worry about scratching the lens it is to nice of a phone to worry about that, plus if you have insurance you can replace the phone if that happens for $50.

Cons on the 970: I found the 970 to be very shutter sluggish (2 seconds from button push to photo being taken) as I fooled with it at the Verizon Kiosk. I also did not find the menu navigation to be as easy as the Moto 815; in fact it was very annoying and confusing compared to most any phone I pick up. Also, why do they bring up the video cam first and then make it so complicated to get to the camera? Is the 950 as sluggish and confusing as these functions of the 970 that I mentioned? "T"

Honors21. How much have you used the 970 and 815? Does the 970 have the terrible echo issues that plague the 815? Just curious to see what kind of background you have with the two phones. The changeover will cost me several hundred bucks so I want to be sure of what I am getting. Thanks for the input on the two phones. "T"

My phone comes up with the still camera first. at a kiosk you can never tell what someone has done. I have not found a way to get the video camera function to be the default. depending on what camera options you have set the delay can very. AF seems to take longer. Since it was a kiosk demo it is hard to judge the normal operation of the phone.

I was at a kiosk once and the 815 was completely inoperative. I guess that means most of them don't work right? I'm starting to get the cellphone consumer perspective. I realize first impressions are important but golly!

I have a confession everyone, just yesterday I turned my service back over to the 6100, from the a970.

My main beef: USING IT.

I don't have a problem with any of the aethetics, such as flip with rotate, buttons, size, screens, etc. My problem is that its just sooo damnnnn sloooowwww. Perhaps this is just coming from someone who texts a lot (and maybe this is just MY phone), but going from one menu to another, pressing number keys in general, EVERYTHING is just so slow. Even more annoying, sometimes a keystroke doesn't commit. You actually get used to waiting for the screen to update according to your input, and sometimes what you press never happens.

Take for instance, if I were to call home. As soon as I open the phone, I hit...

I have found that as my call memory fills up the phone is slower. I deleted my call history and the phone went much faster. seems it might have some ram sharing issues. I delete it from time to time when things seem slow. Helps.

FWIW... somes months ago (2 or 3), I happened to see this phone at a VZW kiosk -- it was being field tested by a manager who was nice enough to let me look at it (although, apparently this was against some official guidelines). Anyway, she had the same complaint that you raise, but thought it would probably get resolved before coming to market. Apparently it has not been resolved. It may well be that for people who are big into txt-msging, this is not a great phone.

On the plus side, she said the rotating hinge seemed to be holding up quite well, even with letting her 6 & 8 year old sons play with her phone for over six months.

True about the hinge. As much as I wished it could "snap" into place, it actually holds up fine.

Now, I have one of the few first phones that were sold at Best Buy. I'm wondering if newer phones are better with this, and I could check that at Verizon. I have a feeling it is a samsung thing, though. Thinking about it, the main reason I purchased a 6000 over the 530 way back when, was due to the 530's sluggish OS. Now, I am also seeing people complaining about the same thing with the 950. If that's the case, then it has to be samsung. LG on the other hand is instantaneous per key presses, and on that note I think I'll switch to 8100.

Wanna buy my phone? 😁

Dee,

You made a good choice going to the LG 6100. It has the unique quality so rare in cell phones; IT WORKS!!!!. For 10 months now with no replacements or repairs we have had a 6100 and it endlessly does all functions perfectly. I had an 8100 for a week and it was a true piece of trash; lousy sound, lousy coverage, lousy speaker phone, lousy menus, lousy everything. I would urge you to stay with the 6100 idea and forget about the 8100. Wait a few months and maybe something really functional will come out and you can trade up to it. For now, the 970, 950, and 8100 are lousy choices in my opinion. Good luck.
