DarkStar

Oct 12, 2005, 7:23 PM
On my LG VX-6100 I was able to picture message myself ringtones. I am able to do that on the 970 but I can't set them as ringtones. Does anybody know how to fix this problem?

Most of the phones that VZW has come out with recently have that feature disabled in an effort top get the consumer to pay for their ringtones through Get It Now. Their is software called BItpim that circumvents VZWs blockage of that feature. But I do not know if it works with this model phone. Here is the site.

I am completely speculating here but I think there is a special extension for ringtones on this phone.

You can record a qcp file as a voice memo and this should be a valid ringtone format as should mid but the phone will not play them as ringtones. You can move a qcp file to the card but there is nothing you can do with it from there within the phone. Can you even play these on a computer?

With a midi file you can only rename the file or erase it. If you delete the .mid extension it will replace it with another. If you delete the .mid and then retype it yourself it will still add another so the file will be name.mid.mid.

There was someone on HOFO who figured out how to do ringtones on a 950 but the same procedure cannot be done on t...

On your PC under network places under tools in folder options then view, try unchecking the box that says "Hide extenstion for known file types". Then you can rename it anything you want. Don't know if this will work, but try it and see.

The folder or files I need to access are on the phone and cannot be moved like the others. Bitpim might be able to show it when it gets working.

yeah this phone kinda sucks i had the same problem with the 8100 but a hack was needed for the ringtones for it to work but other than that there is no other way to to do it even on the new ones my friend just picked one up the mp3 player works but you still cant set a ringtone for it... i hope verizon isnt going to be limiting it to just the ones you download on there service to work which is possable...

i have tried everything and cant seem to get anything to work. i cant even get it to recongnize an mp3 ringer which sucks...

I'm pretty sure it's some kind of switch in the program name or the extension. It's not cost effective to invent a new format or codec for ringtones if at this point they have to force people to use them.

I'm considering buying a ring tone just to see how they work. The trouble is that I have zero interest in hearing some other artist on my phone.

If I was the producer of the ringtone you purchased I would be contacting a lawyer.
Not sure but this is a bit like the MS case where they were making it difficult for product competition by bundling apps in windows. Could it not be said that VZW is doing the same thing? You can buy a 3rd party ringtone but they have installed an OS on the phone that keeps you from using it. I just don't kn...

You have to remember that VZW is a business and they are in this business to make money. And as to your point about freedom...to play devil's advocate...none of us have been MADE to use VZW as our carrier no matter how much WE ALL complain (me incl...

I get the whole VZW is in it to make money but their version of how to make money is so limiting.

Unfortunately I don't want to use my phone in a way that is in alignment with VZW's expectations. I don't want Nelly or U2 on my phone. A ringtone plan that would allow a certain number in a period of time or an upload plan where you make your own would be more compelling than the current offerings.

Who pays for ringtones? Do they really make enough money from that to keep me from making my own? Do many people actually buy more than one. I know one person who has a paid ringtone. He has had it for over a year. Never bought another. What a great business idea!
